Setback Ear Procedures

What is an Otoplasty or Setback Ear Reduction Treatment?

According to the Canadian and American Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, ear reshaping surgery remains a very common procedure. Outstanding ears or protruding ears is a hereditary trait of excess overgrowth of ear cartilage that responds to setback otoplasty or ear setback treatment surgical therapy very well. Ear lobules can be either too small, appear thin, wrinkled and deflated, or have torn ear lobe deformity and respond well to plastic surgical correction, as well overly large ear lobes that may require reduction.

Outstanding ears results from a hypertrophy or over development of ear cartilage. The large bowl shaped structure called the conchal bowl in the center, base of the ear can enlarge during development, leading to ears that protrude too far from the side of the head and lead to outstanding ears. Cup ears result from lack of formation of the folds at the outer aspect of the ear called anti-helical folds. This hereditary appearance responds well to plastic surgery. Reshaping of the conchal bowl can set the ear back closer to the side of the head and reshaping of the various folds of the ear can give a more natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance. Setback otoplasty procedures or setback ear surgical treatment procedures are performed under local anesthesia with no risk of general anesthesia or IV sedation. The ear cartilages are shaped, some cartilage is removed, other cartilages are re-contoured to create folds and shape and the ear cartilage skin framework is then sutured together and will be held in place for up to four weeks with suture bolsters and the use of a headband.

Setback otoplasty can give tremendously pleasing and satisfying results, but a postoperative program is required for 4-6 weeks avoiding trauma to the ears through the use of the headband to hold the ears closely to the side of the skull. There is very little pain and discomfort with this procedure and most patients are extremely pleased with reducing and reshaping the outstanding appearance of their ears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a candidate for Ear Otoplasty?

If you have ears that stick out too far from the side of the head or if your ears have an unusual or undesirable shape, you may be a candidate for Otoplasty.

What is the recovery like for Otoplasty?

The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis under sedation and local anesthesia. The ears are usually bandaged with a dressing that wraps around the head in a turban like fashion for several days, or the simple use of head band. Initial mild postoperative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. The ears usually look "normal" within 10-20 days.
