What is a Liposuction of the neck?

Excess fat, subcutaneous tissue, loose skin and loss of neck and jaw line contour are common consequences of aging. While formal neck lift and facelift procedures address these concerns, they are more extensive operations with more risk, recovery and downtime. The development of new neck “thermal” liposuction procedures has resulted in less invasive ways to achieve attractive, aesthetically pleasing neck and jaw line contours. The laser fiber is able to warm and liquefy the fat and tighten lax soft tissue, achieving aesthetically pleasing contour enhancements. The use of an ultrasound probe, again under local anesthesia, is another technique and energy source (Vaser liposuction) that may be inserted into the excess skin, fat and soft tissue of the neck and jaw line, liquefying the fat prior to its removal.

Vaser Neck Liposuction is a minimally invasive neck tightening procedure developed by Dr. Mulholland.

More recently, radiofrequency assisted liposuction of the neck (RFAL) or a procedure called NeckTite™ has been pioneered by Dr. Mulholland. This small radiofrequency electrical probe is inserted under local anesthesia into the fat, soft tissue and loose skin of the under chin, jaw line and neck. Unwanted fat is liquefied and then removed with a very small hollow cannula while the overlying skin is significantly heated and tightened for enhanced jaw and neck aligned contours that can mimic many of the features and benefits of an open, more invasive neck lift surgery.

Who is a candidate for Liposuction of the neck?

If you have areas of excess fat and under the chin and neck, which is resistant to diet and exercise.

If you wish to change the contours of your under chin and neck. If you have loose skin as well as fat under the chin and neck, NeckTite may be a good non-invasive option.

Most patients are near normal weight or slightly overweight and desire a thinner and more angled contour of the submentum and neck. Individuals with some degree of loose neck skin who do not want a more aggressive neck lift or tuck procedure.

What happens during liposuction of the neck treatment?

The Neck and double chin liposuction is most often performed under local anesthesia and patients can generally go home after. Sterile fluid (normal saline) combined with a local anesthetic is injected into the areas of excess fat prior to the procedure, in a tumescent fashion, to swell the fat cells so that more of their surface area will be exposed to a laser or radiofrequency energy.

The fat cells and loose skin under the chin and on the neck are heated and liquefied by the small radiofrequency (NeckTite™) or laser probe (Smartlipo™). A small hollow tube (cannula) and low suction is then inserted into the now liquefied fat through very small incisions placed in inconspicuous locations under the chin, near the fat deposits and the liquefied fat is removed. As the neck radiofrequency of smartlipo™ laser procedure is a gentle procedure, there should be less bruising, swelling, discomfort and pain than traditional liposuction. Other advantages of applying RF or laser heat to your under chin while removing the fat, is the significant skin tightening effect that occurs and which will improve neck laxity, often without a more invasive neck lift procedure.

What is the recovery time for liposuction to the neck?

The patient may go home after the neck liposuction. A neck and chin compression garment is advised for about 5-7 days following the procedure, as it helps reduce swelling and helps you achieve the final result more quickly. Intermittent garment compression will be needed for 4 weeks following t neck lipo, but can be worn in the convenience and confidential confines of your own home. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-6 weeks. Initial noticeable improvement can be seen within days and the final result takes shape over several months.
