10 most frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting

July 29, 2019

Many say it’s too good to be true, but it’s really that good. CoolSculpting is a noninvasive fat reduction and body contouring treatment offered at our SpaMedica clinic in Toronto. The CoolSculpting device targets and freezes fat cells so your body can naturally remove them in the weeks and months that follow.

Questions? Naturally. Here are 10 of our most frequently asked questions, answered!

1. How is CoolSculpting performed?

The CoolSculpting applicator is applied to the area of unwanted focal fat—typically a combination of the abdomen, hips and/or flanks. The device gently sucks unwanted fat into a chamber, at which point the temperature within the chamber drops below freezing, lowering the temperature in the fat to the point where it undergoes a permanent death in response to cold exposure. Between 22% and 30% of exposed fat cells will be permanently destroyed, for a significant body contouring improvement.

2. Is CoolSculpting painful?

There is some mild to moderate discomfort due to the initiation of strong suction. As the temperature falls however, there is no discomfort. Post-operative hypersensitivity of the skin may occur, but this generally disappears in several days. Rarely, if it persists, an anti-inflammatory known as Gabapentin will provide relief. Usually, any hypersensitivity disappears in a matter of weeks.

3. How long does a CoolSculpting session last?

Studies have shown that exposure to temperatures between 0 and 5°C for a duration of 45-60 minutes provides the best percentage of fat cell destruction. CoolSculpting treatments take about an hour per area, and generally patients return to SpaMedica in Toronto for a second or third cycle every 6-12 weeks to enhance their results.

4. How long does it take to start seeing CoolSculpting results?

In general, 12 weeks after one treatment you will notice body contouring improvements and fat reduction. Many SpaMedica patients sign up for another treatment or two. It takes approximately 6 weeks for the final results of each treatment to show their effects, although some patients begin to see the improvements and local area reduction as early as 3 weeks. Typically, successful CoolSculpting patients receive 2 treatments, 6 weeks apart, with final results becoming visible at week 12, or 6 weeks following the second session.

5. Are there any CoolSculpting side effects?

The fat cell death that occurs with a CoolSculpting treatment is of a small enough volume that your body breaks down the free fatty acids and triglycerides into harmless energy substrates. There are 75+ peer-reviewed studies which show there is no risk of elevated harmful lipids, strokes, heart disease, or atherosclerosis in CoolSculpting patients.

6. Should I massage the area after CoolSculpting?

Following a CoolSculpting treatment, the skin may be raised, swollen, and/or feel frozen. Post-treatment we show patients how to massage the area over the next few hours. In some body sculpting programs we also recommend an immediate shockwave therapy, Cellutone, as well as suction coupled radiofrequency devices like the Velashape, Venus Freeze, Venus Legacy, BodyFX and/or the Excilis in order to reduce swelling and edema and enhance your results!

7. How much weight can I lose with CoolSculpting?

Most CoolSculpting patients can expect 2-3 centimeters’ worth of fat reduction after a single treatment cycle. Many patients choose to return for a second treatment 6-12 weeks later and even a third treatment cycle 3 months after that.

8. What should I do before CoolSculpting?

Avoiding anti-inflammatories before your procedure will help reduce any bruising that may occur afterwards. But other than that, the CoolSculpting procedure doesn’t require much preparation aside from ensuring your body is healthy and close to your ideal weight. CoolSculpting is not a weight loss solution: ideal candidates are healthy, fit, and looking for a tool to eliminate exercise and diet-resistant fat.

9. What can I expect after CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting patients at SpaMedica in Toronto can return to daily activities immediately post-procedure—this includes high-impact aerobic activity. Jogging, running, high impact exercise and/or contact sports may be moderately uncomfortable if there is a hypersensitivity of the skin, but it will not harm you or your CoolSculpting results! It’s important to maintain your weight post CoolSculpting, as significant weight gain will compromise those results.

10. How much is CoolSculpting?

At SpaMedica in Toronto, the CoolSculpting cost is approximately $2000 per zone, with discounted pricing for multi-zone treatments. This includes any combined use of technologies throughout your 6-week treatment series.
