Procedures to Treat Enlarged Earlobes

Enlarged earlobes can occur from hereditary and developmental overgrowth of the earlobes during adolescence or from many years of wearing bulky earrings that tissue expand, stretch and enlarge the appearance of the earlobe. Usually enlarged earlobes are viewed as aesthetically displeasing and distract from normal facial aesthetics, both on front and side view.

Patients can be treated at SpaMedica by Dr. Stephen Mulholland with relatively simple techniques performed under local anesthesia and as an outpatient. Enlarged, misshapen earlobes can be surgically reduced to match the existing ear shape and facial aesthetics.

Are You a Candidate?

For many people earlobes can be too small, underdeveloped or develop creases with age. For those people who are uncomfortable with the appearance of their ears, there are multiple options that can increase, reduce or improve their appearance and size, and restore confidence in your appearance.

Procedure Details

Cosmetic earlobe reduction procedures performed for enlarged earlobe patients is generally a relatively comfortable procedure with a minimal downtime or recovery and patients can have their ears repierced after enough time is allowed for full healing of the earlobe reduction procedure. Wrinkled earlobes are also common condition and can be treated by plumping the earlobe with injectable soft tissue fillers and/or fractional laser resurfacing of the earlobe.

Fat Grafting

Reduction of earlobes can be accomplished through a fat graft procedure to change the shape and appearance of your earlobes.  The patient’s own fat is collected with needles from a distant donor area and re-injected using the micro fat techniques to the hollow or deficient area.

Soft Tissue and Dermal Fillers

Simple injectable ear lobule therapy with hyaluronic acid such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, or micro fat grafting can increase the size of the ear lobe to a more youthful, attractive proportion. Ear lobes may also be too large or hang too low as a result of many years of large earrings weighing down the ear and causing tissue expansion of the lobule. Earlobe reduction is common and is performed simply by removing a wedge shape piece of the ear lobe and suturing the delicate scar so that it has minimal visibility.

Fractional Laser Resurfacing

Fractional lasers are typically used to achieve significant skin tightening, and can be implemented in your earlobe reduction treatment to improve the appearance of enlarged earlobes.

Additional Procedures

Cosmetic earlobe reduction for enlarged earlobes is generally a lifelong improvement. However, if patients continue to insist on wearing very large and bulky accessory earrings, this may cause a slight enlargement and distortion of the otherwise optimized earlobe reduction aesthetics following the earlobe reduction procedure. A repeat reduction procedure can be performed if this were to occur.
