What Causes Wrinkles?
Patients who want wrinkle removal treatment, suffer from a very common condition, specifically loss of the support foundations of the underlying structures of the skin, resulting in wrinkles. Predisposition to wrinkles can be hereditary in nature and is often made worse by environmental conditions and lifestyle. Factors that contribute to excessively wrinkled skin include sun damage, smoking, weight loss and weight gain, over animated facial muscles and a hereditary thin skin that lacks collagen and elastin and the supportive elements of the skin envelope. Wrinkled skin is most common on the face and usually the most aesthetically distressing in this location. Wrinkled skin can be aesthetically unappealing on the neck, between the breasts, on the elbows, upper arms, inner thighs, and on the abdomen above the belly button.
Can I treat wrinkled skin? And if so, what wrinkle removal treatments are available to me?
Patients wanting wrinkle removal treatments can be treated with a variety of techniques and procedures at the SpaMedica Toronto. One of the more common non invasive wrinkle treatments for wrinkle removal is the use of laser technology. Lasers have undergone a renaissance and rebirth in the past five to ten years and, for the laser treatment of wrinkles, there has been the growth of fractional lasers. Fractional lasers use laser beams to disrupt only a proportion of the skin surface resulting in much quicker healing and less symptomatic recovery than older, more ablative resurfacing procedures such as carbon dioxide lasers. Fractional lasers can be fractional erbium lasers, fractional carbon dioxide lasers and “Fraxel” type lasers with microscopic laser beam columns that enter the skin. SpaMedica has all of these types of fractional lasers to give you the best chance of optimized wrinkle removal results. All of these fractional lasers send laser light through the outer layer of the skin and into the underlying wrinkled areas of the skin resulting in new collagen and elastin production leading to a softening and tightening and visible reduction or elimination of the wrinkles. Most of these non invasive wrinkle laser treatments can be performed under topical anesthesia and downtime can be limited to two to seven days. Depending on the kind of fractional laser and the amount of energy, results of facial wrinkles, chest wrinkles, wrinkles on the back of the hand and other body wrinkles can be improved by 50 – 75%. Enhanced improvements can be achieved with subsequent fractional resurfacing treatments performed every six to eight weeks.
Other non invasive wrinkle treatments that can be performed for wrinkle removal include soft tissue dermal filler substances such as Sculptra, Radius, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Teosyal and Voluma. These dermal fillers are injected under the wrinkle providing support and diminishing of the appearance of the wrinkles.
Other treatments available to wrinkle removal Toronto patients include radiofrequency tightening of the skin and infrared heating of the skin. Treatments such as Thermage, BodyTite™, Accent, eMatrix, Tighten and ReFirme are all examples of radiofrequency or infrared devices that can be used to tighten and enhance the results. Chemical peels and diamond and aluminum oxide particulate peels can also be deployed. All these treatments can be combined in a multi layer approach to wrinkles, which result in significant improvement and smoothening.
Lastly, there are minor excisional procedures, such as mini facelift, brow lifting, arm lifting, thigh lifting and tummy tucking can also significantly reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles.
SpaMedica Toronto Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Centre recommends the following treatments for patients who want wrinkle removal treatment:
- Fractional Laser Treatments: Carbon Dioxide and Fractional Erbium Ablative Treatments

Wrinkled Skin Maintenance Required
If I have my wrinkles treated will they come back? And how can I prevent this?
Patients that achieve a significant wrinkle reduction will continue to undergo skin aging processes and there will be some recurrence of the wrinkles to some extent. Minimization of wrinkle recurrence can be prevented and the results of your treatment protected by intermittent maintenance fractional laser treatments as well as Botox. Botox is an excellent treatment for wrinkles that manifest as a result of over animated facial muscles as the muscles causing the wrinkles can be relaxed and softened, resulting in decreased contraction of the skin, which diminishes the fissuring and damaging influences of over animated facial expressions. Patients can also benefit from Botox treatments when performed in conjunction with laser treatments, fractional laser treatments, radiofrequency treatments and infrared red light tightening treatments. Wrinkle removal Toronto patients who treat their animated areas of the face, as well as, wrinkles on the neck, early enough, can achieve significant improvements. They can even delay and prevent wrinkles and facial aging signs that might have otherwise occurred.
