Laser hair removal is one of the most popular non-invasive treatments today for both men and women year after year. It’s a treatment that permanently reduces unwanted hair from the legs, arms, chest, armpits and face. It’s popular partly due to its convenience factor; people don’t have to worry about constantly shaving or waxing regularly. If it’s something that you’ve been considering yourself, check out some of the most commonly asked questions below. Hopefully the answers can help you decide if the treatment is right for you and your needs.
What kind of results can you see after laser hair removal?
This treatment can provide long-term permanent reduction of most of your unwanted, excess hair in any region. It addresses the existing hairs. It’s not uncommon to do a maintenance treatment throughout the year to target the stubborn and new hairs that are growing.
Is maintenance required after treatment?
SpaMedica clients who complete 6 treatments with multiple wavelengths can see up to 80% permanent hair reduction. There may be resistant hair that looks fine and lighter that grow after treatments. We have a “hair removal club” where clients who have completed their 6-treatment program can come in anytime to target their resistant hair for a low cost.
Who is the best candidate?
People with light skin and dark hair see excellent results. With the wide array of lasers at SpaMedica, people who have dark or olive skin are still good candidates with the correct wavelength used (the NdYAG is the ideal laser for darker skin types).
Are there hair colours that aren’t suitable for laser treatments?
Unfortunately, people with grey, blonde or red hair aren’t ideal candidates for laser hair removal. In order for laser hair removal to work, the pigment (colour) in the hair must absorb the light energy of the laser. Light hair can’t absorb the light energy of the laser. The skin absorbs the light and heat, not the hair.
What are the risks of laser hair removal?
This treatment is a safe and low-risk when performed by a trained professional and with the correct lasers. But like any other treatment, there are potential side effects and risks from laser hair removal. It’s more likely to occur in people with darker skin types or tanned skin. Hyperpigmentation of the skin can occur; this may last a few months or be permanent. While it’s rare, skin infections and scarring are possible too.
To minimize these risks, the correct laser must be used for your skin type. Avoid these treatments if you’ve just got a fresh tan. Before and after laser treatments, you should avoid sun exposure to reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
