Plastic Surgery: 5 Considerations to Make Before Booking an Appointment

Plastic surgery 5 considerations to make before booking an appointment

Booking a plastic surgery procedure isn’t a decision that most people take lightly. While it can be a life-changing experience that enhances your self-esteem and happiness, there are plenty of considerations to think about before going for it. From dealing with recovery time to finding out the accreditation of your physician and their medical practice, these are just some of the points to evaluate before making a final decision.

Travelling Abroad for Surgery

Medical tourism has become increasingly popular over the past couple of years. Certain countries, such as Korea, have seen an increase in the number of people who are flying in for plastic surgery. While there are plenty of well-trained plastic surgeons around the world, you have to think about follow-up appointments or how to get in contact with your physician if a problem were to arise after surgery.  Some patients who have travelled abroad return home and unfortunately deal with complications. This all leads to taking more time off and spending more money to fund further surgery with a local surgeon. Furthermore, the quality and safety standards of the facility or plastic surgeon may not be regulated the same way as they are in Canada.

Recovery time after plastic surgery is necessary

There Will be Recovery Time

It would be great if you could just hop right back into life, but the reality is there’ll be downtime after surgery. However, there are some ways to ensure that your recovery goes smoothly and quicker than expected. Some tips include arranging some assistance from a friend or family member to help you around the house after surgery. You’ll also likely be recommended to avoid products that increase chances of bleeding such as herbal supplements and aspirin for two weeks after surgery. Physical activities such as exercising and heavy lifting should be avoided as well.

Go in With Realistic Expectations

There are things that can and can’t be done in plastic surgery. For example, liposuction isn’t a procedure that will help you shed a large amount of weight. It’s meant to reduce the amount of fat in specific areas for a more refined appearance—it’s not a weight loss method or procedure. The same idea goes for hair transplantation. Although seeing a head full of thick and full hair within months would be great, the final results can take up to a year to appear.

The Experience and Certification of Your Physician

Maybe you’ve read articles or have seen the headlines on botched surgeries performed by unlicensed individuals. It’s incredibly important to find out if the physician you want to see has been trained, educated and certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. As well as finding out about your physician’s board certification, it’s a good idea to see if they have expertise in the specific procedure you’re interested in. Find out how many surgeries they perform yearly, look at their before and after photo galleries and look for patient reviews.

The cost of plastic surgery

The Cost of Plastic Surgery

Depending on what you’re looking for and how many procedures you’d like, it can be costly to fund your surgery. Some people save up to afford it and others finance their procedures. Medicard is one of the financing companies that allows patients to make monthly payments to pay for their surgery. Patients can finance their procedure anywhere from 6 months to 6 years.

When you do have a consultation, you’ll have the opportunity to ask your physician for more information about the surgery and their experience in it. This is also the time to see if you feel comfortable and confident with your physician. After all, you’ll be in communication with them after your procedure for follow-up care and appointments.
