We all sweat when the temperatures outside are scorching—this is the body’s natural response to cool itself down when it’s too hot. It’s not just summer weather and intense workouts that could be causing excessive sweating though. If you find yourself sweating constantly, your lifestyle and what you consume could be the culprits that cause you to sweat.
Your Emotions and What You Consume May Lead to Excessive Sweat
Drinking coffee is known to cause sweating. The caffeine stimulates your central nervous system which activates the sweat glands. The heat from a hot cup of coffee is enough to cause you to drip beads of sweat too. Eating spicy food is another factor that can make you break a sweat.
How you feel emotionally is another trigger as well. Have you ever noticed that you’ve gotten a little damp or sweaty when you’re angry? That’s because your body releases stress hormones that increase your heart rate and blood pressure. Your body temperature rises and the sweating begins. Other emotions such as embarrassment and anxiety may also trigger sweat.
The Solutions for Excessive Sweat
Do you still sweat buckets from your underarms, even after restricting or controlling certain factors that were mentioned above? Then there may be an underlying cause. One possibility is axillary hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating. This is where the underarm sweat glands are overactive and produces more sweat than needed to cool the body.
The most convenient solution for most people is purchasing an antiperspirant. Depending on the severity of your sweating, you can start off with a regular antiperspirant to see if it provides you with enough protection. If that doesn’t work, you could move onto clinical strength or prescription antiperspirants.
MiraDry is the Permanent Solution for Underarm Sweat
Solving your sweat problem for good involves a visit to a medical spa or plastic surgeon’s office. MiraDry, one of the latest non-invasive procedures for underarm sweat, permanently removes sweat glands to eliminate underarm sweating. During this treatment, the physician will use a handheld device to deliver controlled electromagnetic energy to target and eliminate these glands. This treatment is also capable of eliminating underarm hair and odour glands. Once they’ve been removed, the sweat glands won’t grow back and the results will be permanent.
The MiraDry treatment can be done in about an hour. There’s no recovery period, so you can jump right back into work and other activities immediately. For maximized results, it’s recommended that patients have two treatments that are scheduled three months apart. While there’s little discomfort during the procedure, patients can take pain medication and apply ice packs for a few days after the treatment.
Botox injections are another medical way to stop excessive sweating. However, the results aren’t permanent like MiraDry. Injections could be made to the underarms to temporarily stop severe sweating. Botox temporarily blocks the chemical signals from the nerves which stimulate the sweat glands. In a clinical study, some patients saw that their results lasted for nearly 7 months.
Excessive underarm sweating can be a big hassle and embarrassing in social situations. Test out different methods such as antiperspirants and avoid consuming drinks and food that are known to induce sweating. If these options give you little to no results, then MiraDry or Botox injections may be the solution for you.
