CoolSculpting and EMsculpting: which one is right for you?

November 8, 2018

Thanks to advances in technology, minimally invasive non-surgical cosmetic treatments have come a long way in the last decade. If you’re thinking of trying body sculpting to get rid of stubborn excess fat once and for all, or even firm and tone the area in question, you’ve got options. The two most popular body-contouring treatments are EMsculpting and CoolSculpting, and each has its benefits. But which is right for you?

The procedures

CoolSculpting and EMsculpting are both excellent treatments that can give your body a more sleek and toned look. CoolSculpting uses targeted cooling technology to freeze and eliminate fat. BTL EMsculpting is the first and only technology to use high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM) for the purpose of eliminating excess fat as well as toning and muscle building. 20,000 supramaximal contractions are delivered during treatment, surpassing the type of stimulus achieved with voluntary exercise. So, in a nutshell, both treatments reduce fat, while EMsculpt also strengthens by building muscle.

While EMsculpt can be used on the abdomen and buttocks, CoolSculpting is more versatile in that it can be used on the abdomen, flanks, thighs, bra fat area, arms, and double chin area. Each CoolSculpting treatment cycle takes 35-60 minutes, and Dr. Mulholland will recommend between 2-6 treatments spaced approximately one month apart for best results. EMsculpt treatments take about 30 minutes and 4-6 treatments are typical, twice a week over 2-3 weeks.

Safety & side-effects

Both treatment systems are FDA-approved and do not require anesthesia. EMsculpt is painless, and there is zero downtime. Post-treatment, some patients feel a bit of muscle soreness the next day—just like you would after a good workout! Some CoolSculpting patients experience numbing during the procedure due to the cold, or unexpected fat cell over-growth in the treatment area, which can be quickly and easily corrected. Dr. Mulholland may also recommend coupling your Coolsculpting procedure with other body contouring technologies available at SpaMedica in Toronto to achieve the best possible results.

Results: what to expect

It takes about six weeks for the results of each CoolSculpting treatment to become completely visible, but you may see changes as early as three weeks. Patients can expect fat reduction up to 20% or by 2 to 3 cm with a single treatment cycle. EMsculpt patients can expect a muscle mass increase up to 16% and fat reduction up to 19%, as well as a 4 cm reduction in abdominal hip circumference. Final body contouring results are visible after the first few sessions and reach their full potential at six weeks. With both treatments, the fat that is destroyed will stay away as long as you can commit to maintaining your weight.
