The cohesive gel breast implant is one of the new “modern implants”. The cohesive gel breast implant, also known as the “gummy bear implant”, is a device whose fill is comprised of highly-crosslinked, viscous silicone gel. Unlike silicone gel from the early 1990s, the cohesive gel implant is not a liquid and is much more like a “gummy bear” or Jell-O®, in that if it is cut in half it simply stays there. Cohesive gel is not liquid, is not “runny” or “gooey” and it does not leak.
What are the incision and pocket options for Cohesive Gel Breast Augmentation?
The cohesive gel breast implants have a shell around the cohesive gel that is made of highly-vulcanized and crosslinked silastic. Toronto Breast Augmentation patients see Dr. Mulholland for his experience in selecting the right procedure for them, whether that is an endoscopic trans-axillary (through armpit) sub-pectoral procedure or an infra-mammary approach, Dr. Mulholland has almost 20 years of excellent breast augmentation surgery outcomes. These cohesive gel implants come in a whole range of sizes and shapes, both teardrop and round and by using Dr. Mulholland’s VECTRA® 3-D breast imaging station, you will be able to select the best possible cohesive gel breast implant for your breast volume and shape goals.
Figure 1. Cohesive Silicone gel Breast Implants (gummy bear breast implants) come in a variety of sizes and shapes, from round to tear dropped. The cohesive (“jello-like”) cross linked nature of these breast implants makes them very popular as these don’t tend to ripple (visible creases) leak and feel more natural than saline or the older more liquid silicone gel breast implants.
Cohesive silicone gel implants generally placed through and under the breast, or infra-mammary fold incision, as they are moderate-to-large in size and will not fit through a tiny armpit, areolar or belly button incision. However, if you are selecting a cohesive gel implant that is under 290g, these are small enough a stealth endoscopic trans-axillary (armpit) approach is then possible.
Figure 2.A.Breast Implants can be placed through several different incision options and the breast implant pocket can be either B. under the chest muscle (pectoralis major) or under the breast gland and over the muscle.
How do I select the Size and Shape of my Cohesive Gel Breast Augmentation?
The advent of the cohesive gel implant over the past ten years has greatly increased the satisfaction of patients undergoing breast augmentation, as they are not prone to leaking, excessive or visible rippling, or spontaneous deflation, as their saline counterparts were. The cohesive silicone gel breast implant is the most popular implant used today and well over 95% of patients, given the option, will choose a cohesive gel implant rather than a salt-water saline implant.
In your SpaMedica breast augmentation experience, Dr. Mulholland will review with you the breast implants that will likely give you the most natural balance in figure, shape and form. However, at SpaMedica, you will also be able to select the specific implant that appeals to you the most with the VECTRA® 3-D breast imaging station.
