What is the Artas® Robotic FUE Hair Transplantation System?

The ARTAS® Robotic FUE Hair Transplantation System is one of the newest and most exciting automated robotic FUE hair transplantation devices. Dr. Mulholland was the first physician in North America to use, refine, pioneer and master the art and science of the combination of Automated AND Robotic FUE hair transplantation. FUE hair transplantation, stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and is the method of using a small rotatory punch to harvest the individual “hair families”, including the shafts and root systems they share. All hair grows in 1,2,3 and/or 4 hair follicular units and FUE hair transplantation will harvest these important embryological units as they grow, rather than surgically excising the scalp, as in strip graft hair transplantation.

The Artas is an automated, Robotic Assisted device that is used by Dr. Mulholland and his hair restoration team to very precisely harvest the large double, triple and quadruple follicular unit grafts. The Artas robot is a very sophisticated system that deploys, like Neograft, a rotatory punch to “core out” the follicular unit. However, the Artas Robot uses a 1.2 mm punch and the angle and depth is planned using the help of a computerized robot, to more accurately “core out” the larger 2,3 and 4 hair follicular units.

The Artas Robot uses computerized tracking and robotic control to ensure accurate harvest with a very low transection rate. After administration of local anesthesia, Dr. Mulholland and his SpaMedica hair technicians spend the initial portion of the robotic harvest setting the angel and depth for the robot to follow. Once this is done, then the computerized tracking system, also under the control of SpaMedica’s hair technicians, allows accurate Robotic “coring” of the Follicular Unit grafts.

Like the Neograft automated, motorized FUE device, the Artas Robotic FUE hair transplantation method avoids the unsightly scar found in the Strip Graft procedure, allowing the patient to wear their hair short, avoid the linear scar and, most importantly come back to harvest more FUE grafts over time, as hair continues to thin. The Artas, with its larger punch diameter, is reserved for the harvest of the larger FUE Hair grafts, when they contain double, triple and quadruple hair shafts. Preserving these will allow the shafts to wrap around each other and provide a more “natural looking” transplantation result than techniques, such as overly cut down strip grafts, that rely on numerous non-anatomical, artificially cut and prepared single hair grafts. FUE hair transplantation and hair restoration can be preformed manually, with Manual FUE, Automated with the Neograft, or Robotically with the Artas FUE hair transplantation system and at SpaMedica, Dr. Mulholland can give you the advantage of using all of these techniques and devices.

What happens after the Artas Robotic FUE device finishes “coring” out the Follicular Unit Grafts?

Once the Artas Robot and the SpaMedica hair restoration technicians have completed “coring” your larger follicular unit grafts, the grafts are then gently removed manually from your scalp and placed in a moist Telfa pad, in an ice cooled Petri dish. All the grafts will be examined graft-by-graft under the microscope to determine the number of hairs in each FU and ensure the graft has all the healthy criteria in order to be successfully implanted.

How are the hair grafts placed into their recipient sites on the top of the head with the Artas Robotic FUE system?

The Artas grafts are usually the larger 2,3 and 4 hair FUE grafts and thus, if the hair restoration and transplantation is for the frontal region these grafts are delicately placed within the slits at the proper angle and depth. Dr. Mulholland’s two full time SpaMedica hair restoration technicians have 30 years of hair transplantation experience between them and over 1 million successful grafts placed. What is the recovery process like following Artas Robotic Hair Restoration?

Following the SpaMedica FUE automated and robotic Neograft and Artas hair transplantation procedures, most patients will require one week off work, unless, of course you can work from home. The first 2-3 days the donor site is covered in a head wrap. The wrap is removed by the 3rd day and gentle hair washing and shampooing using a glass of water and finger tip pressure will be demonstrated.

The tiny donor harvest sites are difficult to even see by one week and, if the recipient site is covered by existing genetic hair, patients can often return to work. If there is very little normal, genetic hair to hide the transplants, it is often a good option to shave the top of the head in the recipient site to allow the grafts and normal genetic hair to grow out together, in which case the recipient will often look acceptable, without scabs in 10 days.

There is almost no pain with Artas Roboic FUE hair transplantation, as there has been no scalpel or sutures used. The very tiny harvest holes and recipient slits are more itchy than painful.

Growth of the grafts occurs in two phases. First phase growth includes 40-60% of the transplanted hair grafts surviving, picking up a blood supply and beginning growth within 3-4 weeks. After the bulbs “take” by picking up a blood supply, approximately 40-50% of the transplanted shafts will go into “shock hair”, fall out and start to grow again about 4-6 months. So hair transplantation patients undergoing the Artas Robotic FUE hair transplantation procedure can often expect good visible hair density enhancement in the first 3-4 months, which is then followed by second phase growth starting at 4-6 months. Over 85% of all grafts take and it is not until 12-14 months that the final density and aesthetic appearance of the hair can be seen.
