What is Female Pattern Hair Loss?

The causes and treatment for Hair loss in men and women differs. Men’s hair loss is related to elevated DHT hormone or androgen type of hair loss while in females can occur from a variety of genetic, hormonal, environmental, medical conditions. The pattern of loss also differs. In men, androgenic Male Pattern Hair Loss is typically recession of the frontal-temporal zones, combined with crow thinning.  “Front-to-back” or “Back-to-Front” patterning is typical and can occur separately, or together and, in the most aggressive form, the two patterns meet together to result if full, Norwood 6 (Friar tuck type) Male Pattern baldness. Androgenic hair loss though common in men it can also happen in women.

The main causes of female hair loss are:

– Side effects from medications

– Hormonal changes (after child birth)

– Menopause

– Sudden weight loss

– Anemia

– Thyroid problem

– Emotional and physical stress

– Polycystic Ovaries

– Results from trauma or surgical procedure

Mechanical, Physical and chemical induced diffuse hair loss are also known causes: *Traction alopecia (due to tight braiding hairstyles for a long period of time) *Destructive chemical hair product (hair relaxant chemicals)

What are the typical patterns for Female Pattern Hair loss?

The common classification for female hair loss pattern is depicted by Ludwig Scale. The characteristic of androgenic alopecia in women is that female hairline remains intact and mainly thins out the top part of the scalp. Diffuse thinning is usually the case where generalize thinning is noticeable from front to back of the scalp.

Figure 1.  Classification of Female Pattern Hair loss. Typically, Toronto Female Hair loss patients will have a thorough consultation, examination and series of tests that will attempt to diagnose and exclude those causes that are metabolic, reversible or patholphysicological.  The tests may include blood tests, hormone profiles and even a small scalp biopsy.  If the causes appear treatable without the initial need for Hair Transplantation, this course of action is pursued first. The SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program is one of Canada’s most comprehensive and can include combinations of topical biological stimulants, injections of biological stimulators into the scalp as well as, topicial vasodilators and intense passive laser light treatments.  Even those Toronto Female Hair loss patients that progresson to FUE (Folluicular Unit Extraction and then transplantation) will often get desirable results by first optimizing the existing scalp hair with a short program of non-surgical hair restoration therapy.

What are the treatments for Female Hair Loss?

Treating Female hair loss needs to be examine thoroughly:

1) The Exclusive Spamedica Non-surgical treatment program
The non-surgical treatment is often the best place to start, as many causes of female hair loss will respond to the non-surgical hair restoration program. The SpaMedica Non-surgical Female Hair Resotration program consists of the following Medical Trichology Regimen:

– NeoLTS: High fluence low level light laser therapy on the scalp. Using a combination of RED and GREEN light directed at the scalp, the mitochondria of the Hair bulbs are stimulated to grow and be resistant to hair loss.

– Medicated Shampoo:  A unique combination of nutrients and medical-grade biological stimulants are provided in the form of a medicated shampoo.

– Morphogen Treatment: A topical serum of nutrients combined with 15% Minoxidil (a scalp vasodilator) with improve blood supply and other essential elements to the challenged hair bulbs.

– Injectable Bio-stimulants: A proprietary combination of  medical bioactivators are injected directly into the scalp to stimulate the DNA of the dormant and challenged hair bulbs.

2) FUE Hair Transplantation:  The FUE, or Follicular Unit Hair transplantation technique, pioneered by Dr. Mulholland and SpaMedica is one of the successful ways, in selected Toronto Female Hair Loss patients to bring back more density and thicker, more luxurious hair in a single session. The Robotic and Automated SpaMedica techniques, BOTH Artas and Neograft FUE are very compelling procedures for female pattern hair loss patients as there is no linear scars that result from the procedure. SpaMedica is one of Canada’s most experienced automated and robotic FUE centres. Hair Loss TransplantationFigure 4.  A. Individual Hair unit families, seen above are harvested during the SpaMedica FUE (follicular unit extraction) process using the: B.  robotic and automated Artas and Neograft systems.  This FUE procedure is very fast, relatively painless after the procedure and best of all, does not result in any linear scars.

3) Combination Therapy:  Many Toronto Female Hair loss patients to present to SpaMedica benefit from a combination of both techniques, the Non-surgical program, followed by Robotic and Automated, Artas and Neograft linear scareless hair transplantation.  The non-surgical program “toughens” up the remaining hair bulbs on the thinning scalp so that the risk of “shock hair”, also called Telogen Effluvium or “shock hair” is greatly minimized. Toronto Female Hair loss patients will undergo a comprehensive personal consultation with Dr. Mulholland and his Hair Transplantation staff to determine if you are a good candidate for hair restoration surgery and also the best way to diagnose the underlying reasons for the hair loss. The final diagnosis will ensure the benefits of both the  exclusive SpaMedica Non-surgical treatment program and whether FUE hair transplant surgery is also a good option for resolving the hair loss problem.

Is Hair Restoration surgery itself difference between Male and Female patients?

By contrast, this is an example of a SpaMedica patient one week after a Robotic and Automated FUE procedure with NO VISIBLE scar at the back of the scalp. With Female Hair loss patients, the area of scalp that is cut shorter is much smaller so the long hair at the back of the scalp can hide the shorter hair.

Strip Graft Scar

Example of a Male Patient, who received a strip graft hair transplantation from another non SpaMedica center leaving a large and displeasing scar at the back of the donor scalp

Female hair loss is unique therefore the SpaMedica surgical approach is also unique. Dr. Mulholland and his team deploy the Artas AND Neograft robotic and automated Hair transplantation harvesting systems to ensure there is no linear scar. In addition, the area of scalp at the back that must be shaven is hidden under the longer hair above it, so, even in the early postoperative phase, those around you will not notice a donor site and you can keep you procedure a secret In female hair restorations, the FUE harvested grafts are placed methodically between existing hair which requires an extra amount of expertise to avoid shock loss to the adjacent hair. To minimize the trauma to existing hair bulbs in the transplant zone, Dr. Mulholland and his FUE team deploy a technique they have perfected called scalp tumescent anesthesia, the injection dilute saline water and local anesthesia in the transplant zone at the top of your head, that not only freezes the scalp so there is no pain, but lifts and separates the existing bulbs so they are not injured during the transplant process. Once his scalp tumescent anesthesia is accomplished (similar in method to when Dr. Mulholland is performing liposuction and the fat cells are tumesced), then a very tiny needle is used to “slit” between the existing hairs, a-traumatically, allowing placement of the FUE hair grafts for the increased density, reducing significantly the chance of injuring your normal thinning hair.Figure 5.  Example of a Male Patient, who received a strip graft hair transplantation from another non SpaMedica center leaving a large and displeasing scar at the back of the donor scalpFigure 6.  By contrast, this is an example of a SpaMedica patient one week after a Robotic and Automated FUE procedure with NO linear scar at the back of the scalp. What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

Artas Robotic FUE hair restoration system

Artas Robotic FUE hair restoration system

FUE is a harvesting method uses Robotic and Rotatary punches to remove tiny hair families, without the traditional surgical knife, where a large chunk of scalp is removed with hair bearing hair (also called a strip graft). The more old fashioned strip graft technique is not as popular as it result in a donor site does with  large obvious linear scar. During the SpaMedica robotic and automated FUE procedure, the individual follicular unit family grafts are removed one at a time with a tiny rotary punch. The small defect left behind by the punch is most commonly 0.9-1.0 mm in diameter and is not even visible at 7-10 day. The FUE grafts are excellent to treat permanent hair loss on both Male and Female patients, as the hair bulb and shaft anatomy is not altered and is “taken as it is supposed to grow” and implanted in the same fashion for natural thick looking hair.Figure 7  A.   The Artas Robotic FUE hair restoration system used at SpaMedica.  Dr. Mulholland also employees the:   B. Neograft Automated FUE system ensuring you always get highly advanced technology for your hair restoration procedure.

Can the SpaMedica FUE Hair Transplantation Procedure be used for non-scalp Facial Hair Transplantation?

The FUE Hair transplantation procedure is also used to treat Hair loss of the eyebrows, eyelashes and beard and mustache facial hair restorations or enhancement procedure. The FUE Hair transplantation procedure is excellent for facial hair restoration and enhancement procedures as the number of FUE grafts is usually very small and the patch of FUE donor hair that must be shaved is very small and easily hidden.  The transplanted FUE hairs are usually selected from the temporal area of the scalp as they have the best facial match and are usually single hair FUE grafts.

How is an Automated and Robotic FUE Hair Transplantation performed?

Female Hair Transplant Toronto

Small Robotic and Automated rotary punches as used to accurately, a-traumatically, quickly, effectively and painlessly extract the individual Hair Follicle families one at a time, ensure no visible scar or thinning hair is left behind. Unlike in male hair loss patients where a broad area at the back of the scalp is shaved, IN FEMALE patients there is always hair left left at the back which is left long enough to cover the shaved area.

SpaMedica  and Dr. Mulholland have the latest and advanced technologies in hair restoration solutions for their Toronto Female Hair Loss patients that use digital imaging and precision robotics and automation to extract viable and healthy grafts for hair restoration.Figure 8.  Small Robotic and Automated rotary punches as used to accurately, a-traumatically, quickly, effectively and painlessly extract the individual Hair Follicle families one at a time, ensure no linear scar or thinning hair is left behind. Who is a Candidate for the FUE Female Hair Transplantation Procedure?

Based on individual health history and medical issues that causes the hair loss, SPAMEDICA uses the tools to assess and select appropriate Toronto Female Hair loss treatment for individual needs and utilize the methods that works best for the patient. Good FUE female hair restoration candidates are Female Hair Loss patients without reversible metabolic, hormonal or medical causes for their thinning hair and who have realistic expectations about the king of hair density that can be achieved.

What kind of Anesthetic is used during the Female FUE Hair Transplatation procedure?

Once the safe donor zone has been selected, hair above the zone is lifted and pinned out of the way. This hair will fall over the FUE donor zone completely hiding it from view. Once the long hair has been elevated out of the way, a patch of scalp hair is shaved short enough to harvest use the FUE technique, but small enough that it can be hidden. Once prepared, the donor site is then anesthetized using a local anesthesia that is similar to what dentists used to freeze teeth and gums.

Is the FUE Female Hair Transplantation procedure painful?

Toronto Female FUE hair transplantation patients can expect to receive a simple local anesthetic in both the safe donor zone and the recipient area. The amount of discomfort during this injection is very mild and minimal, similar to what patients might experience with Botox Injectable or soft tissue fillers.

How long does the FUE Female Hair Transplantation procedure take?

Due to meticulous and careful SpaMedica techniques and depending on the number of grafts required, the hair restoration procedure usually takes between 4 and 8 or more hours.  The FUE transplantation day is divied into two portions. The morning is spent harvesting the grafts and Toronto female hair transplantation patients spend this portion of the procedure comfortably lying face down in a massage bed. Patients are encourage to bring their own I-pod to listen to the music they like the most.  The procedure is made more relaxing and comfortable with the oral sedation administered by Dr. Mulholland. The afternoon is spent on your back, on a comfortable massage bed for the actual FUE graft implantation  process, also painlessly preformed under local anesthesia. This afternoon implantation is entertaining as Dr. Mulholland has furnished his dedicated hair restoration room with a flat screen, net flicks and i-tunes so you can watch your favorite movies or TV shows.

How can I stay relaxed during my long Hair Restoration procedure?

Dr. Mulholland will administer oral sedation and anti-inflammatories, which combined with the expert deployment of local anesthetic will make your day, painless, sleepy and comfortable.  Most patients even recall the specific events of their day!

SpaMedica Bed

How long is the Recovery from my Female Hair Restoration procedure?

The recovery from the procedure is very short up from 1-2 days to up to one week. Female FUE Hair Transplantation patients usually look acceptable the next day, as there is enough hair on the top of their head (recipient site) and long hair at the back of the scalp to hide the thin shaved, donor site.  Following the procedure there is a sensation of some numbness and feeling of bruised or sunburned that can experienced. Minimal swelling and redness can also be present during this time. After several days, there is an itchiness that patients feel, which is indicative of the healing sites. The vast majority of Toronto Female FUE Hair Restoration patients use only anti-inflammatories and ant-itching oral medication following the procedure.

What kind of Results can I expect following my FUE Female Hair Transplanation?

Female FUE Patient

A SpaMedica Female FUE Hair Restoration patient

With in the first three months you can expect the transplanted hairs begins to grow and continue to improve during the following six to twelve months.Figure 8.  A SpaMedica Female FUE Hair Restoration patient who underwent her hair transplantation and who has a visible and pleasing increase in hair density present by 8 months postoperatively. This Toronto Female Hair Transplanation patient had her life dramatically improved with the success this SpaMedica FUE Hair transplantation procedure.

How long will the results of my Female FUE Hair Transplantation last?

Since the donor hairs are taken from the back of the scalp where they are not sensitive to the physiologic, genetic and metabolic effects that causes the hair to fall out the result is life long. Hair is taken from the back of the female scalp where the bulbs are tougher and more resilient and moved to the front, Toronto Female FUE Hair Transplantation patients can expect a lifetime improvement in density.

Is there any maintenance Required following my Female FUE Hair Transplantation?

Regular haircut and normal hair washing routine is recommended. To optimize the longevity of your genetic non-transplanted hair in the recipient, intermittent Laser in the clinic and home bio-stimulant serum and medicated shampoo will ensure optimal densification. There is no maintenance required for the FUE grafts that were transplanted.
