{ Non-Surgical Hair Restoration }

Non-surgical hair restoration is a combination of non-invasive techniques and technologies that will commonly result in thicker, more natural-looking hair without the need for hair transplantation surgery.  The combination of techniques includes light laser therapy, topical minoxidil and growth stimulators, in combination with nutrient-based shampoo.

Patients who undergo the non-surgical hair restoration program will get a combination of treatments during their comprehensive program.  Within the clinic, painless but high-fluence, low-level light therapy, using proven and validated red and green light will have these laser lights positioned and exposed over the thinning scalp hair.  This laser hair growth technology uses very high energy (50mW per bulb which is far stronger than the “laser comb” or “laser cap” home laser treatments, which can be a nice adjunct to Dr. Mulholland’s high energy lasers but not a replacement).

The high energy, low level light laser hair growth treatments, also called NEOLTS (neo-lights) are performed for 20 minutes twice a week for two months, followed by once a week for four months, for a six-month, high-fluence, low-level light therapy program. The treatments are completely painless, relaxing and have no downtime.

Figure 1.  Patients will receive a comprehensive six months program of high energy, low level light therapy.  The Red and Green wavelength lights have been shown to combat and reverse the effects of DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) by optimizing the mitochondria’s ability to produce energy for the cells of the hair bulbs.

There are many studies that show that high-fluence, low-level light therapy in the red and green wavelength spectrum helps stimulate dormant – called telogen – bulbs to grow.  Thus, although high-fluence, low-level light therapy will not stop the progression of your male pattern hair loss or female pattern hair loss, it will stimulate the growth of dormant hair that would otherwise be quiescent and not visible to grow and thus can add to the visible density.  High energy, low level light therapy has a high probability of providing you with will thicker, fuller hair.

In addition to the high-energy, low-level light therapy, patients are also given a topical serum, applied nightly.  This topical serum, called Morphogen, has many topical nutrients, safe scalp growth stimulants and 15% minoxidil (trade name Rogaine). The strong minoxidil is a scalp vasodilator (opens up blood vessels) which improved oxygen rich blood supply to the scalp and is usually only available in strengths of 2-5%.  Morphogen is high-grade, compounded scalp serum penetrates down to the follicles and the bulbs and optimizes, again, the health of those bulbs that are being assaulted by dihydrotestosterone or other genetic factors that will lead to the hair thinning and falling out. The Morphogen is popular, not only because it works in a high percentage of patients, BUT, it can also be applied only to the scalp at night time and does not interfere with normal hair routines in the morning (shower, shampoo, gels, sprays and product) Morphogen has been well proven to optimize the growth of sleeping, or telogen, hair.  The final component of the program is topical nutrient shampoo. (Figure 2) The combination of this nutrient shampoo used every night and morning with the nighttime together with Morphogen serum and the high-fluence, low-level light therapy afford those patients who are not prepared to undergo or do not need to undergo robotic, or automated F.U.E. hair restoration and F.U.E. transplantation surgery, an option to still get thicker, more luxurious hair.

Figure 2.  The SpaMedica non surgical hair growth and restoration program combines laser hair growth technology together with medically formulated topical growth serums (Morphogen) and medicated shampoos to stimulate hair growth and improve hair density non-surgically. Toronto non-surgical hair restoration and medical hair growth patients have found this SpaMedica non surgical hair restoration program and excellent non invasive option to robotic and automated FUE hair transplantation.

Who is a candidate for the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program?

Good candidates for non-surgical hair restoration are those individuals that have mild to moderate thinning hair, but it has not progressed to the point where F.U.E. hair restoration and F.U.E. hair transplantation are the only option.  Good candidates are realistic in that they know the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program  will likely deliver thicker, more luxurious-looking hair, but it will not be a solution for the underlying cause of the male pattern hair loss or the female pattern hair loss.  Well-selected individuals for this program also realize that it is the lowest possible risk program to achieve thicker, more luxurious hair.

Poor candidates are those individuals who have very advanced male pattern hair loss or female pattern hair loss, with lots of bald scalp showing .  More advanced male and female pattern hair loss generally are good candidates for the SpaMedica robotic and automated F.U.E. hair transplantation and F.U.E. hair restoration program.

What kind of anesthetic is used for the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program?

There is no anesthetic required. Both the low-level light therapy, the topical morphogen serum and the medicated shampoo are painless and no anesthesia is required.

What about the use of injectable scalp stimulation?

Selected Toronto non-surgical hair restoration patients may also receive, in addition to the Hair growth laser treatments, Morphogen and medicated shampoo, injections of growth stimulators and stem cells based stimulation products.  Developed by Toronto cosmetic surgeon Dr. Mulholland, the injectable hair growth and stimulation program is highly successful in selected Toronto Hair Loss patients at stimulated noticeable increases in hair density.

Is any part of the non-surgical hair restoration program painful?

There is no pain with the Laser Hair growth and topical serum portions of the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program, which makes it very popular for those individuals who are good candidates.

How long does the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program take?

The program itself takes six months to complete.  Each high-fluence, low-level light therapy takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and the SpaMedica med spas are open late in the evenings two nights a week and also open on Saturdays for your convenience.

How long is the recovery following the non-surgical hair restoration program?

There is no recovery following the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program.  The high-fluence, low-level light therapy, the topical nutrient/minoxidil serum and the medicated nutrient shampoo have no down time associated with them.

Are Female Hair Loss patients good candidates for Non-surgical Hair Restoration?

Yes, depending upon the stage and severity of the female pattern hair loss, the SpaMedica comprehensive Hair restoration program can treat these patients. Many early stage female patients with thinning hair have a tremendous response to the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration and hair growth program. In fact, as the non surgical hair restoration program helps minimize the risk of “shock hair’ following hair transplantation surgery, Dr. Mulholland will frequently insist on patients undergoing the non surgical hair restoration program prior to their “non strip” graft.

What kind of results can I expect following the SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program?

Properly-selected patients, with early male and female pattern hair loss are generally quite happy with the improved densification of their hair.  Although the non surgical hair restoration program will not bring back hair that has already died (totally bald scalp), it will stimulate and express sleeping hairs, or telogen hairs, that will increase significantly the density and appearance of thicker hair in well-selected individuals.

What are Toronto Hair Loss patients saying about their SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program?

Properly-selected patients are quite happy with their non-surgical hair restoration program, as they get denser, thicker hair without the risks of robotic or automated F.U.E. hair transplantation or F.U.E. hair restoration surgery.

How long will the results of my non-surgical hair restoration program last?

In general, those individuals that have undergone the six-month program can expect a lasting densification and thickness to the hair of 12 to 24 months in duration.  However, over time, without any maintenance treatments, the underlying genetic causes of male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss will dominate and hair will fall out and tend to look uncompensated and lack the density that you experienced at the completion of the program.  Thus, maintenance treatments are recommended and with maintenance Laser Hair Growth, topical serums and medicated shampoo’s every 3 months, a very long term visible increase in density can often be achieved.

What kind of maintenance treatments are required following my SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program?

In general, it is recommended that a single high-fluence, low-level light therapy hair laser treatment be performed once monthly. It is recommended that patients who responded well stay on the nightly topical Morphogen serum with the 15% minoxidil and also continue with their medicated nutrient shampoo.

How much will my SpaMedica non-surgical hair restoration program cost?

Toronto non-surgical hair restoration patents who complete their program, may apply a significant proportion of the fees paid for their non-surgical hair restoration against a possible F.U.E. hair transplantation and hair restoration program using advanced ARTAS® and NeoGraft automated and robotic techniques at some point in the future if they desire.
