How to get rid of age spots: every problem has a solution!

December 5, 2018

Age spots—also known as liver spots, or sun spots—are small darkened areas on your skin. They vary in size and typically appear on your most sun-exposed areas: the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. Chronic exposure to the sun, even with sunblock, can cause these undesirable spots. Although most common in people over 50, younger people can get them too. Naturally, the best way to avoid getting age spots is to avoid too much sun exposure. But if you already have the spots, not to worry! We offer plenty of nonsurgical, noninvasive cosmetic interventions at SpaMedica in Toronto that can help make them vanish in no time.

Fotofacial or photofacial treatments use radio frequency energy, intense pulsed light (IPL), and infrared energy to gently target and fade fine lines, spider veins, blemishes, and those pesky brown spots. Applying an ice pack to the treatment area helps reduce swelling, if any, after the fact. Important: any exposure to the sun or tanning beds should be avoided for at least a month, and even after this, using sunblock and protective clothing permanently is recommended. After five treatments, over 80% of patients will see their sun spots and fine lines vastly improved!

The new Picosure and Picoway ultrashort short pulse duration lasers can remove age and sun spots more effectively than ever before, often in a single treatment! IPL is the way to go when you want to do away with those stubborn brown spots once and for all. A fractionated PicoFacial is an excellent way to reduce brown discoloration and sun/age spots from the entire face, neck, chest and hands.

Fractional laser treatments target water and collagen in the skin, improving any texture or pigment irregularities, scars, and fine lines. Fractional CO2 laser treatments send microscopic columns of laser energy through the skin to the dermis, where the heat produces new collagen and elastin. You can expect up to 60% improvement in fine lines, scars, and age spots. This advanced skin resurfacing treatment is far more effective than any cream, lotion or potion currently available!

SonoPeel microdermabrasion uses gentle ultrasound waves and energy to micro-abrade and smooth your skin’s surface. There is little to no discomfort and the appearance of aging, sun spots, acne scarring, or pigment abnormalities are greatly improved. The SonoPeel removes the dead outer layer of skin while revealing the smoother, softer layer underneath. It may take 4-12 treatments to achieve best results, depending on your skin type and condition.

Simple laser spot removal can be performed on your age and sun spots in just a few minutes, with no downtime! The light emitted by lasers or intense pulsed light is absorbed by the pigment in your brown spots, and then works to break the pigment up into tiny fragments. The treatment leaves a small crust where your brown spot used to be, which is then covered with an ointment and adhesive bandage until it falls off after 7-10 days—tiny fragments and all. Age and sun spots often go away after just one or two laser treatments.
