How to get rid of your “man boobs”

March 25, 2019

Gynecomastia Toronto

“Man boobs,” medically termed gynecomastia, is defined as the benign growth of male breast glandular tissue, typically caused by an increase of estrogen, a decrease in testosterone, or the use of certain medications. The condition can be embarrassing, taking a psychological toll on men of all ages. The good news is, thanks to advances in liposuction and plastic surgery at Toronto’s SpaMedica, modern male breast reduction surgery is a viable and effective treatment for many men. If you have unwanted fat deposits that detract from your ideal shape and have tried your best at diet and exercise without success, you’re likely an ideal candidate for a “man boob” reduction.

How does it work?

The male breast reduction procedure involves the removal of fat cells in the breast area via liposuction. The problem with many older techniques was the inability for tumescent liposuction to adequately remove the glandular tissue, often necessitating invasive incisions around the areola or under the breast which resulted in large scars. But with the advent of modern radiofrequency, laser, or ultrasound-assisted liposuction techniques—BodyTite, SmartLipo, and VASERLipo, respectively—glandular tissue and fatty tissue alike can be coagulated, liquefied and effectively removed without trauma to the surrounding area. Depending on your case, Dr. Mulholland may deploy all three methods during the same procedure for optimal, expertly orchestrated results! Dr. Mulholland himself helped to pioneer these highly advanced body sculpting chest fat solutions, sharing his techniques on multiple TV shows and in magazines. So rest assured, you have most definitely come to the right place!

What to expect post procedure

Immediately after the procedure, there will be some swelling, which is contained by your compression garment. The garment can be worn underneath your clothing and is quite comfortable.  It provides great support throughout your healing process and is generally worn 22 hours a day for 3 weeks. It  used to “shrink-wrap” your overlying soft tissue while helping it heal in the ideal shape and contour. Recovery is typically pretty rapid, and it’s not rare to undergo liposuction of multiple areas and return to very light, sedentary work or activities the very next day. If you can though, it is usually recommended that you take 2-3 days off post procedure.

The results of your male breast reduction will be lifelong, as the fat that is removed will not return. It is, however, very important to maintain your weight after liposuction and stay within 5-10 pounds of your post-op weight to ensure the permanence of your contour and figure enhancements. Most patients are extremely happy with the results of their body contouring liposuction procedure! There is no liposuction maintenance required, but once your series of post-operative treatments have been completed, Dr. Mulholland may recommend a single maintenance skin-tightening treatment every 3 months to ensure optimal skin contraction.

Male gynaecomastia liposuction can only be performed once any underlying metabolic cause for your gynaecomastia has been addressed. Schedule a consultation at SpaMedica in Toronto today to learn more.
