Liposuction: The Most Common Misconception People Have About It
Before you have your liposuction surgery, you’ll have to arm yourself with the realities and expectations from the surgery. It’s a very common misconception that liposuction is a way to lose weight, but it’s not. Plastic surgeons often explain to their patients that liposuction is a sculpting procedure, not a weight loss treatment.
Weight Loss is not the Goal of Liposuction
Typically, patients shouldn’t expect to lose more than 5-7 pounds. However, they should see a significant fat loss on their body after liposuction. The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who’s reached their ideal weight and can maintain it. However, the procedure can still be done on someone who’s still in the process of losing weight. Oftentimes, liposuction is a catalyst to healthier eating and fitting in more physical activity. That’s because some patients like their results and want to continue to improve on them by trimming down even more.
The Different Types of Liposuction
With the different technologies and advancements in techniques today, you have a wide range of options to choose from when it comes to fat loss. You can freeze your fat, heat your fat or ultrasound your fat. At SpaMedica, non-surgical liposuction patients receive a combination of different treatments such as the ones listed below to get ideal results.
CoolSculpting: This procedure essentially freezes and disables your fat cells by the use of extremely cold temperatures. Most patients can expect to have 2-3 centimetres of fat reduction after their first treatment.
SculpSure: This procedure is one of the newest but most effective on the market today. Multiple applicators are positioned on the body areas to be treated. These applicators emit laser energy that heat up the fat and tissue to a temperature between 45-47 degrees. Each area is treated for about 20-25 minutes with this elevated temperature to kill fat cells. Many patients can lose 1 dress or pant size after treatments.
BodyFX: Radiofrequency energy is used in this treatment to permanently reduce fat and improve the appearance of cellulite. The RF energy tightens the skin and high-tech voltage electrical pulses play a role in the permanent death of unwanted fat cells. Patients can see 2-6 centimetres of fat reduction in their abdomen area after a combination of treatments.

SmartLipo: This is a laser-assisted liposuction procedure. A tiny laser fibre is used to emit laser energy to heat, liquefy and coagulate the fat. This method of liposuction provides patients with less pain, swelling and bruising compared to tumescent liposuction. Since the skin is heated during this procedure, there’s 17% area skin contraction with increased collagen, elastin and skin tightening.
BodyTite: This procedure uses radiofrequency energy to coagulate and liquefy fat cells and blood vessels. Because of this, removing fat is much easier compared to older liposuction techniques. A major advantage of BodyTite is the enhanced contraction. It provides up to 35% of soft tissue contraction and skin tightening.
VaserLipo: This procedure uses ultrasound waves to soften and loosen up fat cells. The fat cells separate from tight and fibrous attachments. This method of liposuction is ideal for fat grafting (removing fat from an unwanted area to transplant it elsewhere). Some common areas to transplant these fat cells are the breasts, butt or face.
Whether it’s surgical or non-surgical liposuction, the focus is on reducing your fat and sculpting your body—not weight loss. Besides, it should be more exciting to see a visible difference in your body rather than a change on the scale.
