Are You a Candidate?

Laser hair removal is for anyone looking to remove or minimize the appearance of unwanted hair — regardless of their skin pigment. Unlike the majority of Toronto clinics, we guarantee our laser hair removal results.  If you do not see a 75% hair reduction or better, you will receive one or more complimentary treatments until you do.

What is It?

Laser hair removal is the use of laser energy to permanently remove, eliminate, and reduce the growth of unwanted hair.

At SpaMedica we deploy a number of different devices, with the best possible wavelengths, and used in combination to optimize the success and degree of hair removal.

For small areas, such as the underarms and bikini area, treatments are generally performed every six to ten weeks and a series of six treatments are usually required. For large zones, such as half legs, full legs, or the entire back, five or six treatments are required; performed every eight to 12 weeks. Each treatment takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes.

Before & After

How Does It Work?

Once the right wavelengths or combination of wavelengths have been selected for you, the treatment program will commence. The area is shaved so only hair stubble is emerging from the skin. The laser applicator is then applied over the area and the energy delivered. The hair shaft acts as a lightning rod for absorption of the light-based energy from the laser. The heat spreads down the hair shaft and then out and up to the internal and external root sheath around the hair blub. The bulb produces the hair shaft and the primordial cells that lead to new hair during the telogen (sleeping) and anagen (growing) phases of hair growth. The treatment is fairly quick. After a successful treatment you will notice the smell of photocoagulation (burnt hair shafts) as well as little red bumps and swellings around the hair shafts. You will notice extrusion of dead hair shafts over the next 7 to 21 days following your treatment.

Which Lasers Do You Use?

Over the last 20 years Dr. Mulholland and SpaMedica have accumulated the best medical-grade lasers available on the market. This ensures that our patients always receive the best hair reduction possible.

SpaMedica is one of the only medical spas to have the three-wavelength all-in-one laser hair removal device called the Triton. The Triton has 755, 810, and 1064 nanometer wavelengths all in one laser. We can combine the 810 and 755 nanometers for effective use on lighter skin and the 810 and 1064 nanometers for darker skinned patients.

We have 1064 Nd YAG lasers such as the GentleMax Pro and the Elite, and the extremely effective 755 nanometer Alexandrite lasers including the GentleAlex and the Elite Alexandrite laser. We also have a number of 810 nanometer diode lasers such as the LightSheer, the Diolase and the Vectus.

Finally, we have a number of optical and radio frequency combination lasers such as the MOTIF Vantage and the 810 nanometer RF radio frequency combination.

Prep & After Care

  • Avoid sun-tanning or using tanning cream for at least a month before your treatment
  • Avoid plucking or waxing the area for at least six weeks before your procedure
  • Shave the area to be treated one or two days before the procedure
  • Take any antiviral or antibiotics medication prescribed by your doctor
  • Keep the treatment site clear of any cosmetics, lotions, or creams
  • Do not wear tight or abrasive clothing on the day of the procedure
  • Use the protective eyewear provided to you during treatment

After Care

It is normal to feel itchy or irritated 24 hours following treatment and using aloe vera gel or lotion can help soothe your skin. If irritation persists beyond this time period, consult with your specialist to avoid potential problems.

Avoid using products like Nair or plucking new hair growths as that will make it difficult for the laser to remove that hair during future treatments.

Using ample amounts of sunscreen is greatly beneficial to maintaining skin health, and should also be used liberally following your laser skin treatment. Avoid extended exposure to sunlight, tanning beds, saunas, hot tubs, hot baths, or showers for three days after the procedure.

Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with laser hair removal are skin irritation and pigment changes. With skin irritation, you may experience some temporary redness, swelling, or discomfort that will subside within several hours. Due to the sensitive nature of this procedure, it’s vital to find a doctor and clinic with a strong reputation for providing reliable and professional services. Choosing a doctor that has a proven history will greatly reduce the chance of side effects.

Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The answer is an emphatic YES! Laser hair removal does work. Dr. Mulholland guarantees of the highest possible permanent hair removal in Toronto. We expect to be able to achieve 75% reduction or better, or you will receive one or more complementary treatments.

Laser hair removal is a quick and virtually painless procedure that will save you money in the long run. No longer will you have to purchase razors, shaving cream, creams, and waxing kits. It also eliminates and prevents ingrown hairs from developing and is a great option for those that are prone to them.

Additional Procedures

Most patients who complete the program using multiple laser wavelengths will achieve up to 80% or more permanent hair reduction. However, 20% of the hair will still grow. This resistant hair, that has been resistant to three or four wavelengths of light and multiple treatments, will generally be fine, wispy, less coarse, lighter. Additionally, all the hairs will be synchronized into the same growth cycle with a prolongation of the sleeping or telogen phase.

Thus, many SpaMedica laser hair removal patients join our Hair Removal Club. These patients have completed the SpaMedica six-treatment package and can come back anytime there is resistant regrowth for a fast, lower-cost laser removal. This is far more effective and efficient than waxing, shaving, or electrolysis.

Why Choose SpaMedica Laser Hair Removal Clinic

SpaMedica and Dr. Mulholland have been pioneers in laser hair removal and continue to be at the forefront of the development of new high-speed and efficacious technology. By selecting SpaMedica, you will be assured that you get the best possible experience to minimize any risks or complications. In addition, you get the optimal wavelengths of light to ensure the highest permanent reduction available.

Many of our Toronto patients have gone to other laser hair clinics that are extremely low cost. But these clinics are usually far less experienced and often only deploy one type of laser energy wavelength.  These patients treated at other clinics often become frustrated as they may have undergone numerous treatments but don’t see a tremendous amount of reduction.  This is because some of the follicles are deeper; making it more difficult to access with the single energy wavelength or pulse duration offered by these clinics. When there are no other energy wavelengths or lasers available, you won’t get the same enhanced permanent reduction.
