Plastic Surgery: Science or Art?

August 18, 2018

Is Cosmetic Surgery a science or an art? It often depends who you ask. However, Doctor Mulholland and all of the staff at SpaMedica (from our injection nurses to our medical estheticians) passionately believe it’s both.

Plastic Surgery comes from the greek word plastikos, which means to mold or to form, and has actually been around for thousands of years. There is evidence of broken noses being “repaired” in Ancient Egypt as early as 3000 to 2500 BC. In most cases the purposes of these surgeries was not simply functional but cosmetic. A nose was said to reveal a lot about a person’s character and nose surgery could change how one was viewed by society. These early doctors were pioneering procedures that combined their early understanding of physiology with the esthetic sense of the time.

Passionate About the Science

Doctor Mulholland embodies this pioneer spirit of his profession. He has been a constant proponent of new medical technologies throughout his career as a surgeon. He has more hair removal lasers than any other clinic in Canada. He champions and works on the development of new technologies such as the BodyTite liposuction device. And he has developed a reputation for being the first to bring many cutting-edge technologies to Canada (such as the newly offered Cellfina).

Throughout this, the doctor has always advocated safety as a cornerstone of his practice. He personally evaluates new technologies on the market and only offers them at his clinic when they have passed rigorous safety evaluation. He believes in training all of his staff to deliver the best-in-class procedures and to deploy our various technologies safely and most effectively.

Passionate About the Art

Before starting his Cosmetic Surgery practice, Doctor Mulholland trained in ENT Oncology (patients who suffer from ear, nose, and throat cancers) where he developed a detailed eye and honed his innate sense of how to create beautiful facial proportions. This artistic eye is something he carried over with him to SpaMedica and it has made him one of the most successful Plastic Surgeons in Canada.

Similarly, Dr. Mulholland personally trains his injection nurses to deliver the best possible results in Canada. The nurses he hires must pass his rigorous standards to demonstrate they are well-qualified and have a developed and proven artistic sense when it comes to delivering beautiful injectable results.

This is why it is always critical to choose a surgeon whose aesthetic matches your own. Much like an artist, many surgeons have their own “style” and the best way to get a sense of this is to look at their before and after pictures. Are their rhinoplasty results all small, cute noses with upturned tips or more varied noses that fit the natural balance of the eye shape and cheekbones? Are their breast implants large, impressive, and meant to attract the gaze or a subtle balancing of the natural waist-hip ratio? These before and after photos are where you can get an idea of what the surgeon sees as beautiful and whether that aligns with your own sense.

Patients have been choosing SpaMedica for over 20 years because Dr Mulholland’s proven track record of groundbreaking, safe, procedures with gorgeous results. It is what has made him and SpaMedica one of Canada’s premiere medical spas. If you’re interested in seeing what we can do for you, click here to book a consultation.
