Dr. Mulholland

Cheek and chin augmentation involves increasing the projection of the chin and/or cheeks to more aesthetically pleasing proportions. The augmentation can be accomplished with breaking the bones and moving them forward or with artificial firm implants that are surgically inserted on the bone, or with soft injectable gel or micro fat grafts.

The most versatile shaping techniques involve long lasting, safe, reversible injectable gels or fat grafting to create optimal cheek and chin balance. Soft tissue fillers can be tailored and contoured to the specific needs of the facial proportions, where solid implants have limited sizes and versatility.

Cheek and Chin Augmentation Before & After Results

In the pre-operative consultation the doctor will review your facial profile and discuss what your goals are. It is best to be realistic in expectations. Long-term procedures usually involve implants, whereas shorter-terms are non-surgical injectable treatments.

Dr. Mulholland will walk you through the procedure and care that should be taken. You will need to discuss your medical history and allergies with the doctor to avoid adverse and negatives effects during and after surgery.

Procedure Details

Dr. Mulholland uses injectable products to achieve long lasting symmetry and form for the nose and chin. Injectable products uses the patient’s own fat substances harvested from areas where the patient may not want fatty collections and then micro fat needle injections into the cheek and chin.

Micro fat grafting technique for cheek and chin augmentation can result in four to five years of natural, attractive cheek augmentation and chin augmentation corrections.

Other cheek and chin augmentation techniques include the VolumaLift, an injectable treatment where soft tissue gels. The injectable VolumaLift has become a very popular procedure and is easily performed in the office as an outpatient, under local anesthesia.

The VolumaLift™ involves injecting gel based, soft tissue fillers or fat grafts into the droopy and deflated areas of your face. The augmentation is performed under topical and local anesthesia and takes less than one hour.

The risks are minimal and the soft tissue facial lift effects are impressive. It is recommended that first time patients perform the procedure with a shorter acting hyaluronic acid to assess the aesthetic outcome. Once it is determined that the VolumaLift™ achieved the desired aesthetic goals, the conversion to a more long-term, safe reversible gel filler or particulate stimulant filler (Radiesse and Sculptra) or fat grafts can be made, or patients can continue using hyaluronic acid once or twice per year.

The benefits of having chin augmentation is having your beautiful facial features stand out and have a more well-balanced look that will be aesthetically pleasing and increasing self-esteem.

Additional Procedures

Patients can see other facial procedures to be done alongside the chin augmentation; these can include five-minute nose job and Botox Injectables. It is best to speak with the surgeon what options would be suitable for you and your recovery.

  • Who is a candidate for Chin and Cheek Augmentation?

Clients with under projected and weak chin, where the cheek and chin is not strong enough to create optimal facial contour and balance may be good candidates for chin and cheek augmentation.
Patients with loss of facial fat, contours and volume will benefit from augmentation of the chin and cheek. Clients who wish to look more youthful, but are not yet prepared for a facelift, may also benefit from volume augmentation of the cheek, chin and face.

  • Some of the common products for Cheek and Chin Augmenting Volumalifts include:
    • HYALURONIC ACID (HA): Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane and Perlane are forms of hyaluronic acid, a natural component of human skin. These injectable substances hold water and swell under the wrinkles and folds. Unlike collagen, hyaluronic acid products require no skin testing, as allergic reactions are rare. Results of with shorter acting HA’s are pleasing and may last 6-9 months. A VolumaLift™ cheek and chin augmentation using the hyaluronic acid volume can last anywhere from 18 – 24 months.
    • RADIESSE OR SCULPTRA: These products (Radiesse is a calcium hydroxyappetite suspension and Sculptra is a suspension of polygalacitc acid or fruit acid) are injectables that can be used during a VolumaLIft, cheek and chin augmentation, but are biostimulants (excite the body into making its own collagen) and need 2-3 injections over many weeks to achieve the desired long term VolumaLift™ results.
    • MICROFAT GRAFTING: Small fat grafts harvested with small needles from areas on your body where you may have been “banking” some extra fat and the purified and re-injected with small needles in the face during a Micro Fat Grafting VolumaLIft® cheek and chin augmentation procedure.
