Tattoo removal and your skin tone
Just as every tattoo is unique to the person who chose it, so too is the process of laser tattoo removal. A variety of factors can influence the success of your tattoo removal process, such as the size and location of your tattoo, the colour and depth of the ink, as well as your specific skin tone. Once all the relevant factors have been assessed by Dr. Mulholland’s experienced consultation coordinators, a treatment protocol tailored to your needs will be prescribed for the best results.
While laser tattoo removal options for darker skinned patients were once quite limited because lasers had difficulty differentiating dark tattoo ink from darker skin tones, modern patients of any skin colour can attain great results with the PicoSure, an acoustic, photomechanical device which shatters tattoo ink particles without harming the surrounding tissue. However, darker skin tones may still have a slightly higher risk of side effects such as skin lightening due to the amount of pigment in their skin. Still, the PicoSure’s absence of any significant thermal effect makes it the safest, most effective, and most efficient tattoo removal device on the market for people of any skin tone.
Realistic expectations are key
With SpaMedica’s unique combination of lasers and wavelengths, including the Picosure, PicoWay, Revlite, Accolade, and Affinity lasers, patients can remove, on average, 90%+ of a tattoo in far fewer treatments and with far fewer side effects than other clinics. Not surprisingly, most people are thrilled with their results!
How many treatments you’ll need
Laser tattoo removal patients at SpaMedica in Toronto can achieve near total removal in 6-9 treatments, spaced 6-8 weeks apart—far more successful than other laser systems, which typically require 8-16 treatments for a 65% to 80% reduction! The Picosure and PicoWay lasers have the most successful removal of tattoo ink with the lowest percentage of stalled ink and the lowest risk of hypopigmenation. Once your laser tattoo removal program has come to an end, no further maintenance is required. Some patients may choose to have another tattoo placed in the treated area after a minimum of 12 weeks following their final laser tattoo removal session.
What recovery looks like
Immediately following your laser tattoo removal session, a frosting will form on the treated area, which will then become a crust after about 15 minutes. You can expect some flaking and redness for the next week. Topical antibiotic ointment, along with a dressing, and frequent cleansing with lukewarm water are required post-treatment. Avoiding sun exposure for several weeks is also recommended, to avoid hyperpigmentation of the area.
