Tips to heal without scarring post tattoo removal

April 8, 2019

Over 50% of North American women and 45% of men aged 18-45 have a tattoo. And although tattoos are supposed to be forever, many of us know that often, the feelings that motivated that decision don’t always last! Indeed, between 25% and 35% of people eventually come to regret their tattoos! The good news? If you have tattoo regrets or your tattoo is fading and you’re tired of it, or it just doesn’t hold the same meaning for you that it once did, SpaMedica’s laser tattoo removal procedures should do the trick.

Laser tattoo removal at SpaMedica in Toronto

At SpaMedica in Toronto, we have been offering laser tattoo removal for the past 20 years, making us one of the most experienced laser tattoo removal clinics in Canada. We also offer the latest and most comprehensive range of laser removal devices available. Based on your skin type and ink colours, we treat your tattoo with the most effective lasers for you personally, achieving an average 90%+ visible reduction in as few as four treatments. We have assembled six of the most effective lasers ever made, as well as every wavelength of laser light used to remove tattoos. This variety ensures that our patients achieve a truly optimal and yet still affordable outcome in the fewest number of treatments possible.

Unlike some lasers that rely on heat, the more modern tattoo lasers—such as the Picosure and Revlite—have a much shorter pulse duration. They rely less on heat injury and instead create a mechanical acoustic shattering of the pigment. The shattered particles then flake off while the deeper ones are eliminated naturally by the body. In addition to removing the tattoo quicker than older tattoo removal devices, the PicoSure and Revlite also present a much lower risk of “ghosting” (hypopigmentation).

What to expect post tattoo removal

Laser tattoo removal is generally well tolerated by patients. Usually, topical or local anaesthesia accompanied by an air cooling device is enough to keep the procedure comfortable and certainly less painful than getting the tattoo! Immediately following your laser tattoo removal procedure, a frosting is visible that lasts all of 15 minutes, before then becoming a crust. During your recovery period, you may experience flaking and redness for about seven days. After two weeks, most treated tattoos can easily be covered up with make-up. Here are a few tips to speed up your healing process!

  • Topical antibiotic ointment, occlusive dressing, and frequent tepid water cleansing in the shower are likely all that’s required post-treatment, and Dr. Mulholland’s experienced SpaMedica laser tattoo removal team will give you detailed instructions to this effect.
  • It is recommended that you avoid sun exposure for several weeks following each treatment to avoid hyperpigmentation of the treated area.
  • Crusting will last for as long as your skin requires to protect the area, so be patient! In other words, leave the skin alone and make sure to avoid friction or irritation. Never pick or remove the skin from a scab, as this can cause unnecessary scarring!
  • If you experience severe itchiness, you can take an over-the-counter antihistamine to help relieve some of your discomfort but never scratch or disturb the area.
