Learn More about SpaMedica’s Hymenoplasty

If you are considering undergoing a hymenoplasty, it is important to be well-informed about the procedure beforehand. Find more about SpaMedica’s hymenoplasty procedure below.

What is a Hymenoplasty?

The hymen is a small bridge of mucosal tissue (vaginal lining) in the vaginal entrance (introitus) to the vaginal canal. It is the hymen, or bridge of the vaginal lining that is disrupted at the time of first intercourse. A Hymenoplasty is the reconstruction of this mucosal bridge that will restore the perception of virginity and lack of penetration from intercourse.

There are many different types of Hymen configurations and these have been classified into 4 anatomic variants, depending upon the degree of bridging tissue that covers the entrance to the vaginal canal.

Who is a candidate for Hymenoplasty?

Any female who desires to restore the Hymen for religious, cultural or social reasons, for the perception of vaginal virginity may be a candidate for a Hymenoplasty.

How is the Hymenoplasty performed?

The SpaMedica gynaecologist, Dr. Sasha (a nationally renowned minimally-invasive gynaecologist) who also specializes, in female vaginal health and wellness, performs the procedure.  The Hymenoplasty is performed in the comfort and safety of the renowned SpaMedica Plastic Surgery Center under local anaesthesia and light sedation. A small mucosal flap bridge is developed from the existing vaginal lining and is positioned and sutured in place to simulate the natural hymen that is present prior to vaginal penetration.

What happens to the Hymen after the Hymenoplasty after sexual intercourse?

After vaginal penetration or sexual intercourse, of course, the hymen is traumatically avulsed from its attachments, leading to trauma, blood and tissue as evidence of penetration of the vaginal canal. The small amount of Hymen lining tissue heals quickly after the disruption and leaves no localized defect.

Is the Hymenoplasty procedure painful?

The surgical correction of the Hymen is performed under local anaesthesia with light sedation. There is some slight discomfort from the infiltration of the local anaesthetic, but the procedure itself is not painful.  Postoperatively, there is minimal discomfort and patients can return to normal light activities immediately with high-impact aerobic exercise activities at four to six weeks.

At what time is it safe to have sexual intercourse after a Hymenoplasty?

There needs to be total healing of the mucosal bridge, so avoidance of sexual intercourse for the desired effect of the hymen disruption should wait between 6-12 weeks following the procedure.

Who will see me during my Hymenoplasty consultation and who will perform the Hymenoploasty procedure?
