SpaMedica Labiaplasty & Labial Reduction

If you are considering undergoing either a labiaplasty and/or a labial reduction, it is important to be well-informed about the procedure beforehand. Find more about SpaMedica’s mons pubis procedures below.

What is a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the overall form and function of the Labia Minora and/or Labia Majora.  A classic Labiaplasty is the surgical reduction of protruding, overdeveloped segments of the Labia Minora or Labia Major. The Labia Majora and Minora frame the introitus or entrance of the vaginal canal. The clitoral hood and clitoris extend into the Labia Minora.  The exit of the urethra, or urinary passage tube is between the clitoris and the introitus, and also enveloped between the Labia Minora. The Labia Majora are the lips outside the Minora and envelope them.

Who is a candidate for a Labiaplasty?

There are several aesthetic and functional reasons why Toronto Labiaplasty patients present for a procedure. The most common reason for a surgical manipulation is labial hypertrophy or enlargement of the Labia Minora which requires Labia Minora reduction. The Labia Minora may overgrow during development and extend well beyond the Labia Majora and this overgrowth may form both a functional and aesthetic concern.  Functional symptoms associated with labial hypertrophy, or enlargement of the Labia Minora, include invagination and pain during physical activity and this movement in and out of the vaginal canal during physical activity and/or sexual intimacy and intercourse, can cause significant pain or loss of sexual satisfaction and gratification.

What is the treatment for Labia Hypertrophy and what is a Labial reduction?

Labia Minora reduction is performed by surgically reducing the size and projection of the Labia Minora.  There are two general types of labial reduction surgeries, each performed by Dr. Mulholland and the SpaMedica gynaecologist, Dr. Sasha.  When the labial hypertrophy and overgrowth is more towards the top,  in its orientation closer to the clitoral hood, a large triangular segment of overgrowth can occur and this generally lends itself to a wedge resection technique.  More generalized enlarged Labia Minora may respond better to a a trim reduction.  The wedge resection or trim can lead to excellent aesthetic and functional outcomes.

How is the labial reduction performed?

Labial reduction is performed under local anaesthesia, with or without IV sedation or oral sedation.  Local anaesthesia is infiltrated through the Labial Minora and then a carbon dioxide laser-cutting tool, or Radiofrequency cutting tool is used to perform the wedge-reduction, or trim procedure.  The use of laser and radiofrequency devices minimizes bleeding, bruising and swelling following the procedure.  An absorbable suture is then used to suture the newly-fashioned Labia Minora.  The procedure takes approximately one hour to perform and patients can return to activities and light duties the following day.  Full activities, high-impact aerobics and sexual intimacy needs to wait, and resume approximately six weeks following the procedure.

Is the Labial Reduction treatment painful?

Labial reduction treatments are generally performed under local anesthesia and sedation and the postoperative pain is referred as mild-to-moderate in nature. The post operative course is sore, but mild to moderate and easily controlled with anti-inflammatory medication.

What kind of results can I expect from labiaplasty?

Labial reduction techniques generally leave patients very happy with the aesthetic and functional improvements during high-impact activity, exercise and sexual intimacy.  In addition, the aesthetic improvements leave the patients very happy with the overall aesthetic balance with the appearance of their Labia Majora and Minora.

What is the most aesthetic relationship of the Labia Majora to the Minora?

Just like there is no one aesthetic paradigm of beauty for the upper lid, the lower lid or the face and nose, there is no one aesthetic paradigm of beauty for the Labia Minora and its relationship to the rest of the Vulvar anatomy.  In general, most patients find the Labia Minora to be most aesthetically pleasing with the Labia Minora slightly behind or slightly visible beyond the Labia Majora.  Although variations exist, excessive Labia Minora hypertrophy that extend well beyond the Labia Majora are deemed to be aesthetically and functionally dissatisfying, as well, Minora that are extremely retracted can also be unattractive.

What other adjunctive techniques may be performed at the time of my Labia Minora reduction or labial reduction or Labiaplasty?

Toronto Labioplasty patients may also like to augment the remaining labia at the time of the trim or wedge procedure, or later, as well as augmentation of the labia majora to treat deflated, and atrophic changes. These Labial Augmentation or plumping procedures may be performed using either fat grafting or Juvederm Voluma.  Other adjunctive techniques include injection to the neurovascular bundle at the anterior ceiling or vaginal vault, also known as the G-spot. The injection into the G-spot, called the G-Shot provides more stimulation and sensation during intimacy and intercourse. The G-spot may be performed at the same time, as well as Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation using fractional resurfacing with the following SpaMedica Gynecological lasers, including the Mona Lisa Touch, the Syneron CORE Intima or Fractora on the Labia Minora and Majora to decrease wrinkling, atrophy and deflation.

How much does a Labial Minora reduction cost?

Labia-reduction techniques generally cost $2,500 to $3,000 depending on the techniques and the amount of surgery required.  Additional costs for IV sedation may be incurred.
