What is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is the use of specialized lasers that permanently reduce hair. One of the more common areas for specialized laser hair removal is mons pubis, perivaginal, labia major laser hair removal. Also known as Brazilian laser hair removal, the safe and effective removal of unwanted hair on the Bikini line is accomplished with high-tech lasers. Dr. Mulholland and SpaMedica have been at the forefront of laser hair removal technology and employ all major laser hair removal lasers at the clinic. Toronto patients choose SpaMedica for our 20 years of experience and our large selection of lasers and wavelengths to suite all skin and hair types.
How is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Performed?
After a consultation, patients who are good candidates for laser hair removal have the region shaved to stubble and a test spot performed. Based on the characteristics of the test spot and the skin type, the laser hair removal procedure may be performed at the same time or after a few days to allow the test spot characteristics to manifest. The laser is passed over the area of unwanted hair and the energy from the laser photons permanently damages the hair follicle resulting in a permanent reduction of hair.
How Many Treatments need to be Performed and What Kind of Permanent Reduction Can I Expect?
In general, five sessions of laser hair removal on the bikini area will be required to ensure that all hair follicles in the sleeping and growing phase are treated. Each treatment results in a visible and noticeable reduction of hair and after five treatments generally most patients will experience between 50-80% permanent hair reduction. The irritating effects of shaving and waxing, such as stubble, folliculitis, and ingrown hairs of the bikini region, are greatly improved.
What Happens to Hair That is Not Permanently Reduced?
Brazilian laser hair removal treatments result in a permanent reduction. Hair that does not grow back, however, is often miniaturized; meaning the hair shaft is not as coarse, the hair is lighter, and generally all the hair grows at once. This facilitates simple treatments at SpaMedica in the “Laser Hair Removal Club.” Patients in the club come in for treatment to maintain areas where permanent reduction has been achieved. Treatments are lower-cost and faster than the initial laser removal.
What Kind of Lasers are used at SpaMedica to Perform My Brazilian Laser Hair Removal?
Dr. Mulholland and SpaMedica are at the forefront of laser hair removal technology. Over the last 20 years we have accumulated every major laser hair removal system required for the best possible results. We have a number of 810 nanometer diode lasers such as the LightSheer, the Diolase and the Vectus. We also have 1064 Nd YAG lasers such as the GentleMax Pro and the Elite; the highly effective 755 nanometer Alexandrite lasers including the GentleAlex and the Elite Alexandrite laser; and a number of optical and radio frequency combinations such as the MOTIF Vantage and the 810 nanometer RF radio frequency combination. Finally, SpaMedica is one of the only medical spas to have the three wavelength laser hair removal device called the Triton which has a 755, 810 nanometer and 1064 nanometer all in one laser. One can combine the 810 and 755 nanometer on lighter skin and the 810 and 1064 nanometer on darker skinned patients.
What Do All These Laser Hair Removal Devices Mean?
Having multiple laser wavelengths means that some non-responsive hairs to one wavelength may be sensitive or respond to another wavelength or laser device. By having multiple lasers that can be used during your treatment program, Dr. Mulholland and SpaMedica can assure the best possible reduction for Toronto patients.
Is Brazillian Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Our technicians are experts at minimizing discomfort. The use of topical anesthetic cream, air chilling devices, and cryogen sprays minimize the discomfort associated with laser hair removal. Most patients find their treatments reasonably comfortable.
Can I Get Laser Hair Removal if I Have Dark Skin?
SpaMedica has multiple wavelengths designed for light and dark skin. Individuals with dark skin and dark hair or with light skin and dark hair are all candidates for laser hair removal. The right wavelength and laser will be deployed depending on your skin and hair type.

Side effects may include temporary swelling, redness of the area, and potential discolouration of the skin (Hyperpigmentation). Blistering is a very rare side effect. SpaMedica’s extensive experience in these treatments, and the selection of the right wavelengths for your skin and hair type, means that the probability of these risks and complications are greatly alleviated.
