How Long Does it Take to Recover From a Vaginoplasty?

In general, women can expect a full vaginoplasty recovery after 4-6 weeks. The vaginoplasty recovery time depends on the patient’s general health prior to the surgery, the extent of the procedure and how strictly the patient follows the surgeon’s pre and post-operative instructions.

How Long Does a Vaginoplasty Take?

The vaginoplasty procedure will last between 1 and 2 hours. Patients will then spend another 2 hours in our recovery area under the supervision of a nurse.

What is a Vaginoplasty

A Vaginoplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation procedure that is used to restore the vagina and surrounding muscles to a more youthful or pre-childbirth condition.

Different Types of Vaginoplasty

During your consultation and assessment by SpaMedica gynecology director, Dr. Sasha Syvstonyuk, you will be examined, and the different vaginoplasty procedures that align with your goal will be explained to you. Some of the different types of vaginoplasty include:

Laser-Assisted Perineoplasty

The vaginal and perineal floor is comprised of a network of skin and muscles that can be traumatized through childbirth. Perineoplasty involves tightening the muscles on the floor of the pelvis. Non-surgical laser tightening and rejuvenation is performed on vaginas with moderate laxity with high-tech laser and energy devices.
In more advanced cases of vaginal laxity and volume loss, particularly following an episiotomy or a surgically-assisted vaginal birth, minimally invasive lasers or radiofrequency resurfacing may not bring about an improvement, and vaginoplasty surgery can be performed.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is the most common vaginal rejuvenation procedure. This procedure involves reducing the length of the labia minora that may be causing the patient some discomfort and pain. As well as reducing the length, a labiaplasty can also reduce asymmetry.

Who is a Vaginoplasty Candidate?

Vaginoplasty is an ideal procedure for those with vaginal laxity and lack of fulfillment during intimacy. Furthermore, some patients have discomfort from scarring from previous vaginal surgeries and a desire for a refined labia and vulva contour. The patient will want to improve appearance, tighten, and restore self-esteem and confidence.
You may be a good candidate for vaginoplasty if:

  1. The structure of your vagina and vaginal canal has changed due to aging and/or childbirth.
  2. You frequently experience pain, soreness, or discomfort during physical intimacy, riding a bicycle, or horseback riding.
  3. Multiple vaginal childbirths have resulted in laxity that negatively impacts your sensation during intercourse.
  4. You have stress urinary incontinence.
  5. You have symptoms of vaginal atrophy due to menopausal changes.

The best vaginoplasty candidates are women in good physical and mental health. You should be comfortable in your body but want to improve the appearance or function of your vagina; this could be to enhance your sex life or address concerns like dryness, discharge, and urinary incontinence.

How to Prepare for a Vaginoplasty

Prior to your vaginal rejuvenation surgery, your expectations, medications and medical history will be reviewed. Your surgeon will provide you with a post-operative care routine to ensure you a speedy recovery.

It is advised that patients stop smoking 1 month prior to surgery, avoid drinking alcohol for 2 weeks prior and stop taking aspirin 1 week prior. Ensure a friend or family member drives you to and from our centre and stock your fridge with easy-to-prepare meals for your recovery days following surgery.

How is a Vaginoplasty Performed by Dr. Svystonyuk?

All laser vaginoplasty and laser vaginal tightening procedures are performed under topical or local anesthesia and optimize your return to form and enhancement. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, or IV sedation are also options to ensure your complete comfort.

By using a laser to make incisions, there is reduced injury to surrounding tissue, enhanced precision, and minimal post-op pain. During the procedure, the tissue is tightened and sutured together to create a stronger pelvic floor and tighter vaginal diameter.

What to Expect After a Vaginoplasty

Immediately after a surgical vaginoplasty, patients will experience temporary soreness, swelling and some bruising. Patients can expect to return home – where they will spend a couple of days resting – after a few hours in our clinic’s recovery area.

If you undergo laser vaginal rejuvenation, then you may have dryness, discharge, and sensitivity for several days following the procedure.
Ice packs and prescription pain medication are effective comforts but overall, recovery is mild and most return to work within 3-5 days. Patients can expect a full recovery after 6 weeks and all stitches are absorbable so a return session to remove stitching isn’t necessary.

Vaginoplasty Recovery Time

Immediately after surgery: Patients will experience mild pain that is managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. It is advised to rest as much as possible in the first couple of days.
Day 3: Most patients return to work if it does not involve physically strenuous activity.
Week 1: Swelling and pain around the surgical area will have lessened and many women begin light physical activity.
Month 1: Stitches used to close incisions will have by now dissolved and patients can resume more intense exercise at the doctor’s discretion.
Month 2-3: Most patients are by now 100% healed and can continue all regular activities.

Vaginoplasty FAQ

How Painful is it to Get a Vaginoplasty?

The IV sedation, laughing gas or general anesthesia and local anesthesia administered means patients feel no pain during the procedure. The post-operative discomfort and swelling will be controlled with medication and will usually disappear completely after 2-6 weeks.

Does a Vaginoplasty Leave Scars?

Stitches used to close incision points naturally dissolve after a couple of weeks and scarring is not visible since the incisions are made on the inside. Laser vaginal rejuvenation offers an incision-free alternative.

How Long Do I Have to Wait to Have Sex After a Vaginoplasty?

Following your procedure, you should wait at least 6 weeks before having sex again.

How Soon Can I Give Birth After a Vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is often performed on women who have finished having children. The procedure is used to correct damage and loose skin caused by childbirth. However, as a rough guide, patients should wait at least 3 months after surgery, before considering getting pregnant again.

What Is It Like Having Sex Post Vaginoplasty?

Improving sexual function and enjoyment are often the most important goals of treatment. Following surgery, women usually report tighter muscle tone that increases sexual experiences for both them and their partners. Most patients are very satisfied with the procedure and enjoy a more fulfilling sex life with greater confidence.
