{ The Fractora V }

What is Vaginal Laxity Syndrome and Vaginal Atrophy and how can Fractora V help?

Vaginal laxity can occur following childbirth and/or aging changes (or post breast cancer chemotherapy) with the loss of estrogen effects on the lining and muscular integrity and strength of the vaginal canal. Other age related or reduced estrogen effects on vaginal atrophic symptoms include dryness, discharge, inflammation, urinary incontinence,  and pain during intimacy and intercourse. The Fractora V is a unique vaginal rejuvenation technology, co-developed by Dr. Mulholland, to treat both Vaginal Laxity syndrome and deliver enhanced vaginal integrity and tightening, as well as improvement in the signs and symptoms of Vaginal Atrophy.

Fractora VFigure 1. The Fractora V is a specially designed array of very thin needles that are gently inserted in the  lining of the vaginal wall and a low voltage radiofrequency current is delivered down each pin, creating a localized thermal injury to the vaginal lining. A series of thousands of tiny thermal injuries to the vaginal lining heal with new, more youthful tissue that exhibits more tightness, elasticity and mucous secretions. The RF current flows from the end of the pin, where the thermal injury occurs and then flows to the side negative electrode causing a non-ablative (more gentle) heating and tightening effect on the vaginal wall.

What is the Fractora V?

The Fractora V is a fractional radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation device co-pioneered and developed by Dr. Mulholland of SpaMedica.  Like fractional CO2, the fractional radiofrequency ablation, or the Fractora has long been used for skin rejuvenation and reduction of wrinkles and atrophic aging signs of the face and body.  Fractional CO2 systems such as the Mona Lisa Touch and the CORE Intima are also part of the SpaMedica vaginal rejuvenation program, in addition to the Fractora V. The Fractora V consists of a network of very thin rejuvenation pins on a specially designed vaginal applicator.  RF current (radiofrequency  energy) flows down each pin creating a small thermal injury in the lax, atrophic lining of  the vaginal wall.  There is space between each pin, so alternating regions of the lining is not treated with the thermal injury (hence the fractional nature and design). The un-injured areas of the vaginal lining, acts as a “reservoir” for healing the small crater like lesions.  The new tissue that forms contains new collagen, elastin, ground substances and support tissues to produce the enhanced tightening for the lax vagina, as well as enhanced tone to improve symptoms of urinary incontinence. The Fractora V treatments also stimulate the formation of new mucinous secreting cells to provide more lubrication, decreasing dryness, irritation and pain during intimacy. At the end of each pulse, the RF current flows in more gentle fashion up the negatively charged side electrodes creating a more gentle, non ablative tightening of the vaginal wall. The double benefit, ablation and tightening is one of the big advantages of the Fractora V over other vaginal tightening technologies.

Fractora V DiagramFigure 2. The effect of the Fractora V on the vaginal lining. The Fractional, or proportional thermal RF injury of the vaginal lining creates a small thermal defect, or crater in the vaginal lining that is healed by the uninjured vaginal lining left between the fractional ablations. The new tissue that heals the 1000’s of tiny defects contains new collagen, elastin and ground substances for more support and tightening as well as mucinous secreting cells for more lubrication. At the end of each ablation the RF current does flow up to the negatively charged creating a non–ablative vaginal tightening.

How does the Fractora V work to tighten and rejuvenate the vaginal?

The Fractora V is a novel way to provide vaginal rejuvenation, as it creates a fractional radiofrequency ablation of the epithelium and the sub-mucosal tissue similar to the MonaLisa Touch or the CORE Intima, but uses ablative radiofrequency energy rather than laser.  At the end of the ablation, the RF current flows from the numerous positive electrodes to the negative-side electrodes.  This radiofrequency flow from the positive to the negative electrodes creates an additional non-ablative sub-mucosal tightening over and above what might achieve with fractional CO2, leading to enhanced vaginal canal tightening and rejuvenation.

The specially designed and patented Fractora and Fractora V is adapted to the vaginal canal and allows treatment of the side walls, ceiling and floor of the vaginal vault.  This treatment is performed, similar to the fractional CO2 with the MonaLisa Touch and the CORE Intima.  The Fractora V is performed as an office procedure after speculum examination of the cervix and vagina by your SpaMedica gynecologist.  The Fractora V is performed in a 360-degree fashion withdrawing gradually until the entire vaginal side walls, floor and ceiling have been treated.

Does the Fractora V vaginal tightening and rejuvenation system hurt?

Patients treated with the Fractora V, the MonaLisa touch, the Core Intima and the Forma V or ThermiVA report none-to-mild discomfort during the procedure.

What is my post Fractora V care like?

There is no specific care following the Fractora V.  Like the fractional CO2 treatments of the MonaLisa Touch and the CORE Intima, patients may experience a very mild degree of vaginal discharge over several days, but this dissipates quickly.  There is no additional topical or endo-vaginal creams needed.

When can I return to my normal activities of daily living?

Patients can return immediately to normal activities; both exercise and normal activities at work and daily living.

When can I resume sexual intimacy?

Sexual intimacy, stimulation, coitus and intercourse is generally not recommended for six weeks after their treatment.  There are no restrictions after the six-week period and patients undergoing the treatment have reported more than 75-80% improvement in vaginal tightening and more fulfilling, gratifying sexual intercourse and coitus.  Over 90% of patients are satisfied with their improved sexual intimacy life and symptoms of vaginal atrophy.

How much does the Fractora V cost?

Toronto patients with vaginal laxity undergoing vaginal tightening treatment with the Fractora V, in the absence of the V-Tite or any other treatment will undergo a treatment once a month for three months.  The cost for a single Fractora V treatment is $1,000.  The total treatment package purchased up offers the best possible   purchasing all three procedures up front and can lead to customer-value pricing.

Is there any maintenance required following my Fractora V?

The Fractora V results in significant improvements in both vaginal atrophy with improved symptoms of  dryness, inflammation and pain. Decreased dysuria and urinary incontinence, as well as increased sexual gratification and pleasure from tightening of the vagina and relief from vaginal relaxation syndrome.

Following the series of three treatments or a single treatment in combination of the V-Tite, patients are recommended to begin a non-ablative maintenance treatment once every three to four months.  The non-ablative maintenance treatment will include the FORMA V or the ThermiVA, which are both non-ablative radiofrequency energy treatments performed by a highly-trained, skilled SpaMedica vaginal technician. For even better results maintenance treatments with the Fractora V can be added to the program.  Three to four treatments a year can be purchased individually in a “pay as you play” package  fashion.
