What is the best procedure for breast enlargement?

September 2, 2019

Breast augmentation or enlargement is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in North America. It is a procedure which uses highly advanced prosthetic devices known as breast implants to enhance the volume, proportion, and/or shape of the breasts. No matter what your reasons for wanting a breast augmentation, or what your specific goals happen to be, knowledge is power when it comes to landing on the right breast enlargement procedure. Here, I offer you a basic breakdown:

Breast augmentation via breast implants: silicone vs saline

We offer two kinds of breast implants at Toronto’s SpaMedica: saline (saltwater) implants and cohesive silicone gel aka “gummy bear” implants, the latter being by far the most common choice among my patients. While saline breast implants were popular in the 90s when there was a concern about the safety of the liquid silicone gel implants in use at the time, the development of a semi-solid yet soft cohesive gel option that looks and feels more natural, and does not leak or rupture has become the preference of most patients. Additionally, they very rarely ripple or produce visible irregularities. Saline breast implants on the other hand, have been around for about 40 years and have a longer legacy. However, they lack viscosity and in certain positions, rippling of the breast implant shell is visible, unlike cohesive gel, which holds its shape structurally in any position. Saline breast implants also have a risk of rupturing and leaking—it’s likely you’ll have to replace your saline breast implants every 10 years. That being said, all modern implants now have smooth shells and no risk of ALCL (Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma—a rare but treatable type of lymphoma that used to develop around breast implants).

Modern breast augmentation at SpaMedica in Toronto is a very safe and quick procedure usually performed in an hour or less. The procedure can be broken down into the incision, pocket, and implant stages. We will go over all of this together during your thorough consultation.

Breast augmentation via fat grafting

Breast augmentation via fat grafting is another viable option for patients who desire a very modest increase in volume and projection: the degree of achievable increase is often limited to about a ½ cup size. For patients who desire a full 1-2 cup+ increase, a cohesive gel breast implant is recommended. How does fat grafting work? We harvest unwanted fat from other areas of your body like the hips, thighs, or tummy and inject it into the breast area. Many consider it an advantage that natural tissue like your own fat can be used, not to mention, harvesting from your donor sites will improve your overall shape and contours. Fat graft survival ranges from 30-70% and when you choose SpaMedica in Toronto, you’re ensuring you achieve the best results possible.

How much do breast implants cost?

Breast augmentation surgery at SpaMedica in Toronto starts from $8999, depending on the type of breast implant we decide upon together during your consultation and whether or not you have existing implants that need to be removed and a pocket that must be corrected. Although cohesive gel breast implants are more expensive than saline breast implants, they’re warrantied for life.
