About Loose Tummy Skin
Patients with loose tummy skin suffer from a very common condition, specifically excess loose skin of the abdomen that may or may not be accompanied by stretch marks, excess fat, and loose tummy muscles. The most common cause of loose tummy skin is childbearing and childbirth. During pregnancy, the growing baby expands the tummy skin beyond the elastic recoil potential that the skin can accommodate, causing damage to the elastic fibres and resulting in excessive skin laxity.
Where Does Loose Tummy Skin Tend to Show Up?
Loose tummy skin is particularly common above the belly button and just above the pubic line. When the skin is stretched beyond its capacity, actual tears can form in the soft tissue matrix of the skin, resulting in stretch marks. Stretch marks appear as white, soft lines on the skin and can be a significant source of aesthetic concern for many patients.
During childbearing, the tummy muscles, known as the rectus abdominus, can splay apart and may never fully return to the midline. This separation reduces support for the internal organs, which push forward and can create a visible bulge or rounded appearance to the lower abdomen. There may also be extra fat and subcutaneous tissue beneath the loose skin and extending toward the flanks, which can further contribute to an uneven abdominal contour.
What Else Can Cause Loose Tummy Skin?
While pregnancy is the most common cause, loose tummy skin can also result from significant weight loss, repeated cycles of weight gain and loss, and the natural aging process. As we age, the body produces progressively less collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm and resilient. Over time, this leads to a gradual loss of skin tone across the body, including the abdomen, even in patients who have never been pregnant or experienced significant weight changes.
Can Loose Tummy Skin Be Treated Without Surgery?
Patients who are not interested in or prepared for excision procedures have access to a range of effective non-surgical laser and energy-based treatments that can meaningfully improve the appearance of loose abdominal skin. These treatments work by stimulating the skin's natural collagen and elastin production, gradually restoring firmness and improving texture over a series of sessions.
Non-surgical treatments are best suited to patients with mild to moderate skin laxity. Results develop progressively rather than immediately, and a realistic expectation is meaningful, visible improvement rather than a complete correction. Our team will assess your skin thoroughly at your consultation and provide an honest picture of what is achievable for your specific concerns.
