Acne Scar Treatments at SpaMedica
Fractional Laser Devices (CO2, Erbium, Pico Fractional): These treatments create precise micro-injuries in the skin, prompting collagen production and skin renewal to gradually smooth and refine scar texture over a series of sessions.
Fractional Radiofrequency: This method heats the deeper layers of skin using controlled radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and support the skin's natural healing response, improving overall texture over time.
Fractora: Fractora combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to resurface the skin and reduce scarring by promoting comprehensive skin rejuvenation at multiple depths.
Morpheus8: This advanced technology focuses on contouring and remodelling the skin's surface and is particularly effective for treating deeper, more pronounced acne scars due to its ability to deliver radiofrequency energy at greater tissue depth.
Fotona SP Dynamis Max: The Fotona SP Dynamis Max is a dual-wavelength laser platform that addresses acne scarring at both the surface and deeper dermal levels simultaneously, making it a versatile and precise option for a wide range of scar types and skin tones.
Intracel: Intracel merges the benefits of microneedling with radiofrequency technology to enhance collagen production and improve the overall quality and smoothness of scarred skin.
Skin Tightening Devices (Evoke, Forma, Venus Freeze): These devices use thermal energy to enhance skin firmness and elasticity alongside scar reduction treatments.
IPL and Pulsed Dye Lasers: These treatments target the redness and pigmentation that often accompanies acne scarring, improving overall skin tone and reducing post-acne discolouration.
Chemical Peels: A chemical solution is applied to the skin to exfoliate the outer layers and diminish the appearance of superficial acne scarring, and can be used as a standalone treatment or as part of a broader multi-technology program.
Microdermabrasion: This technique gently resurfaces the skin's outer layer to reduce the visibility of superficial scarring and is well suited to patients looking for a lower-intensity option or using it as part of a maintenance routine.
Microneedling: Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production and progressively improve the appearance of acne scars over time, and is safe for all skin tones and types.
Combining Technology Is the Key
At SpaMedica, we understand that effective acne scar reduction requires a strategic combination of technologies rather than a single standalone treatment. We offer one of the most extensive selections of acne scar removal devices and laser wavelengths in Canada, and our team customizes each treatment plan by blending the most appropriate laser and radiofrequency technologies for each individual patient's concerns.
Who Is a Candidate for Acne Scar Treatment?
Individuals dealing with persistent acne scars that have not responded adequately to other treatments are ideal candidates for our acne scar treatment program. The program is designed to address scars of varying depths and types, with a tailored approach that focuses on removing damaged skin cells and promoting regeneration to effectively reduce scar appearance. During your consultation our team will assess your skin and advise on the most appropriate treatment path for your specific scarring.
Benefits of Acne Scar Treatment
Long-Lasting Improvement in Skin Quality: Advanced treatments such as fractional laser and radiofrequency often produce long-lasting results that continue to improve in the months following treatment as new collagen matures.
Improved Skin Tone and Evenness: Scarring can leave the skin red and hyperpigmented. Our treatment programs work to reduce uneven tone in and around scar tissue for a more consistent and even complexion.
Boost in Confidence: Acne scarring frequently affects self-confidence. A meaningful improvement in skin texture and tone can have a significant positive impact on how patients feel about their appearance.
Acne Scar Treatment Risks
While acne scar treatments offer meaningful benefits, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with these procedures:
- Mild to moderate redness and swelling following treatment
- Temporary discolouration, particularly in patients where hyperpigmentation has been treated
- Several days of swelling and bruising in patients with more severe scarring
All potential risks and side effects will be discussed in full during your consultation.
Why Choose SpaMedica?
When you choose SpaMedica and the expertise of our doctors, you are choosing a team that understands deep acne scars require a multi-faceted approach for optimal improvement. We employ a strategic blend of energy-assisted devices to ensure that even severe acne scarring sees the best possible outcome, resulting in an enhanced overall collagen response and significant improvement in the smoothness and appearance of your skin.
How Is Acne Scar Treatment Performed?
During your consultation at SpaMedica, if active acne is still an ongoing concern, an appropriate acne treatment program will be established first. This program may combine acne skincare, photodynamic therapy, and intense pulsed light photo facials, with or without topical or oral antibiotics and low-dose Accutane where indicated.
Once the active acne treatment program is complete, the acne scar treatment program begins. Depending on your assessment, this consists of fractional radiofrequency and laser devices, IPL, and non-ablative radiofrequency, with each treatment time and number of appointments varying by individual. A single multi-applicator maintenance treatment every three to four months is then recommended to protect and extend the results of the program.
How to Prepare for Treatment
Patients with acute, inflammatory, or nodulocystic acne should consult with our specialist before beginning treatment. Anyone with an ongoing medical illness should avoid acne scar treatment. Patients on low-dose Accutane or oral Vitamin A do not need to stop their medication before undergoing a non-surgical acne scar treatment program.
All patients should:
- Stop smoking at least two weeks before treatment
- Refrain from taking aspirin, supplements, or medications that may slow healing
- Avoid skincare products containing retinol or glycolic acid for two to four weeks before treatment
- Wear sunscreen consistently in the weeks leading up to treatment
- Inform our team at your first consultation if you are prone to cold sores
Acne Scar Treatment Recovery Timeline
Day 1: The treated area may appear red and somewhat swollen immediately after treatment. This is a normal response to the energies used.
Days 2 to 3: Most patients with moderate scarring can resume regular activities, though some redness and swelling will likely still be present.
Days 2 to 5: Initial redness and swelling gradually subside.
Days 4 to 7: Skin may become dry or crusty in patients treated with fractional radiofrequency and laser devices, which is a normal part of the healing process.
Days 8 to 10: Patients with more severe scarring may require a longer recovery. By this point most major recovery symptoms have significantly improved.
Beyond Day 10: Most acute recovery symptoms should have resolved. Patients should continue to follow all post-treatment care instructions provided by our team.
