Treatments for Age Spots & Sun Damaged Skin

Age spots — also called liver spots and solar lentigines — are flat, brown, grayish brown or black spots on the skin. They appear in a variety of sizes and usually afflict the face, hands, shoulders, chest, back and arms.

Using a series of SpaMedica Intense Pulsed Light treatments, known as the proprietary FotoFacial program, which was pioneered by Dr. Stephen Mulholland, to lighten the spots and even out the skin tone is one of the most commonly used methods today to improve age spots, sun spots and sun damage.

Procedure Details

Age spots appear in a variety of sizes and usually afflict the face, hands, shoulders, chest, back and arms. It’s no surprise that these are the most commonly exposed areas to the sun. Photodamage accumulates in your skin over time, including thinning of the skin, broken capillaries, multiple deep wrinkles, excessive brown pigmentation and skin laxity and these sun damage changes can be seen very early on in life, appearing more visibly after the age of 40.

The FotoFacial procedure is considered to be one of the latest and biggest advances in the last four years in cosmetic procedures.  This laser works on deeper blood vessels and stimulates collagen to help smooth out wrinkles and improve the appearance of chicken pox scars.

CO2 Lasers

CO2 lasers and SpaMedica fractionated treatments such as Affirm, Smart Skin and SpaMedica’s eMatrix treatment will provide a noticeable degree of improvement, while also addressing other skin issues which may be present such as wrinkles, laxity, scarring, enlarged pores, acne and Rosacea.

Fractional Lasers

Fractional laser skin resurfacing is one of the most effective methods for the reduction of scars from chicken pox.

Intense Pulsed Light

The Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to colour correct the unwanted brown and red discolouration and spider veins, improving the tone of the skin to be lifted.

The SonoPeel microdermabrasion uses gentle ultrasound waves and energy to micro-abrade and smoothen the surface of your skin.  By reducing the thickness of the top layer of your skin, or the stratum corneum, your skin will not only be smoother, but will also be improved by helping to reduce the appearance of age spots.

Side Effects and Risks

Depending on the treatment or combination of treatments selected, post treatment there is often some dry crusting and scabbing that will fall off within four to ten days.  Cosmetic camouflage makeup can be deployed if the area of the age spot is small; however, if it is generalized to the entire chest, face or hands, several days off work may be required.  There’s very little pain following these treatments.  Topical anesthesia is the only discomfort-reducing modality required.

Results and Outcomes

The results of an age spot treatment at SpaMedica in the hands of Dr. Mulholland or his cosmetic medical spa team are excellent, with reductions of 50% to 95% occurring with single or combination therapy.

Additional Procedures

Often, Dr. Mulholland or the SpaMedica cosmetic laser dermatology team may recommend complete treatment of the entire anatomical area, rather than just the age spots, to ensure the entire face, neck, décolleté, forearm or back of hand is rejuvenated and enhanced.  Additional treatments may also be beneficial; including fractional COand radiofrequency devices to smooth the appearance of wrinkled skin in addition to the age spots (these devices include fractional CO2, Fraxel®-like resurfacing devices, fractional radiofrequency needle devices such as Fractora™ and INTRAcel).  Additional deployment of Botox Injectable or dermal fillers and/or non-invasive skin tightening procedures may also enhance appearance of age spot-affected skin.  Soft tissue dermal fillers to provide volume over deflated surface areas with age spots can also enhance the overall result.

This laser or intense-pulsed light therapy and/or combination therapy can be deployed to significantly reduce the appearance of your age spots, if not eliminate them, and also provide overall enhancement of facial, hand or body aging.

Patients can be assured that through regular maintenance, the lesions will have a lower chance of reoccurring. Reoccurrence will certainly happen if you do not maintain your result with proper home skin care, sun protection and quarterly laser maintenance treatments. Once the areas have been treated with the best SpaMedica treatment program for your pigmented lesions, your treatment professional will recommend a home regime which will include sunscreens and protective therapeutic garments (Sun Soul) to protect your skin.
