What is a Fractional CO2/RF Laser?

The Fractional CO2 laser passes microscopic columns of energy into deep layers of the skin, creating a production of new collagen and elastin. The process allows for controlled damage to the cells, triggering the skin’s natural healing process. After the treatment, cells will grow back stronger, firmer, and faster, resulting in smoother and tighter evenly toned skin.

Who is a Fractional CO2 Laser Candidate?

Those suffering from acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity of the jawline and neck and pigment irregularities are the perfect candidate for this highly successful treatment.

Benefits of a Fractional CO2 Laser

Revitalizing Your Skin
This modern fractional laser and RF treatment is far more effective than any cream, lotion, or serum on the market today, as it resurfaces your skin more safely and effectively than ever before. It also stimulates your existing collagen for firmer, more youthful skin.

Diminishing Irregularities
When it comes to fortifying your skin, ridding it of irregularities or scarring, there is no better treatment than fractional laser/RF resurfacing. Reduce the appearance of pigmentation, minimize sun damage, and more with minimal downtime and discomfort.

Correct Signs of Advanced Aging
Shave years off of your appearance! Our Fractional CO2/RF Laser treatment leads to steady rejuvenation over several months, lasting up to several years.

Promote Smoother, More Even Skin Texture
Due to the increased benefits, quicker healing times, fewer risks and lasting effects on the skin, fractional RF/ lasers have replaced non-fractional lasers in the field of aesthetic enhancement.

Different Types of Fractional CO2/RF Laser

Fractional Erbium Laser
Erbium, or ErbiumYAG, lasers use infrared light to penetrate thermal energy superficially below the skin’s surface. Tiny microthermal zones are produced in the middle layer of skin, damaging collagen and aged skin cells, promoting the generation of new collagen and healthy cell regeneration. Erbium laser is a milder, less invasive treatment option than a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser.

Fractional CO2 Laser vs. Fractional Erbium Laser

Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment
While non-surgical, this treatment is considered to be more invasive than other skin resurfacing treatments, which is why it achieves such noticeable results.

Fractional RF Resurfacing Treatment
Is also very popular and uses an array of silicone-coated needles that penetrate in unison across the skin’s surface and release ablative coagulation, stimulating a fractional production of new collagen, ground substance, wrinkle reduction and tightening.

Fractional Erbium Laser Treatment
Fractional erbium laser treatments are more common in older patients. As it is generally compared to micro-needling, the procedure targets tissue that is deeper below the surface, resulting in improved collagen production. Erbium fractional laser treatments are not ideal for darker skin tones due to a high risk of discoloration. Consult with Dr. Mulholland’s team for any hesitations.

How is a Fractional CO2 / RF Laser Performed by Dr. Mulholland?

Once a SpaMedica consultant has performed a thorough medical history and physical assessment, the procedure will be reviewed, including aftercare, and recovery. The treatment will be administered within one of our suites under the guidance or direct care of Dr. Mulholland.

How to Prepare for a Fractional CO2 Laser

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure for approximately one week before your treatment and wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
  • Stop applying any “irritating” skin products, such as retinoids, at least 24 hours before your appointment.
  • If you plan to take anxiety or pain medication before the procedure, please plan for someone to bring you home.
  • Arrive on time for your laser treatment with cleansed skin. Do not arrive with any makeup/mascara, lotions, powders, or perfumes on or around the areas that will be treated.
  • If you cut your facial hair, shave the morning of the treatment but do not apply lotions or aftershave.
  • Contact lenses should be removed before treatment.
  • The procedure is performed comfortably using Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), topical anesthesia and local anesthesia. IV sedation may also be used when combined with other procedures

What to Expect After a Fractional CO2 Laser

Immediately after the procedure, your skin will appear red and feel warm to the touch. This side-effect will decrease between 2 to 48 hours. With our recommended makeup to cover any problem areas, you may return to work in 3-7 days depending upon the energy selected and depth of treatment delivered.

Post-treatment care for your skin will be discussed with you during your consultation, and a post-care treatment sheet will be given to you on the day of your treatment. Almost all skin types will tolerate the procedure, and there is minimal discomfort. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/laser-resurfacing/about/pac-20385114

Fractional CO2/RF Laser FAQ

How Painful is it to Get a CO2/RF Fractional Laser Treatment?

At SpaMedica, we are committed to reducing or eliminating painful treatments You’ve probably heard that laser treatments feel as if a rubber band is snapping against your skin. We use a potent combination of Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), topical anesthetic cream, an air chiller and local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. Though truthfully, the sensation depends on the depth and area of the procedure along with your pain tolerance. Deeper ablative laser treatments such as CO2 /RF resurfacing may require a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.

Is CO2/RF Laser Good for Acne Scars?

Yes, this type of treatment is safe and effective for facial acne scarring. Still, we recommend that you come in for a consultation to pinpoint exactly which laser or RF resurfacing procedure will work best for your complexion.

How Long After a CO2 Treatment Should I Wait Before Botox or Dermal Filler (like Juvederm) Treatments?

Whether you have scheduled appointments for injectables before your CO2 treatment or vice versa, there should be a two-week window between each procedure to give the skin a chance to heal. Despite what you may have heard, laser treatments do not melt fillers. It’s actually recommended that Botox be injected at least two weeks before so that the collagen can support the smoothing of the skin. Having said that, Dr. Mulholland and the other SpaMedica Plastic Surgeons have a tremendous amount of treatment experience and will usually combine Fractional CO2/RF, Fillers and Botox in one carefully and expertly executed treatment session.

How Long Does Fraction CO2 / RF Laser Skin Resurfacing Last?

Most patients see a vast improvement in wrinkles, coloring irregularities, and scars. When you undergo this procedure for aging skin, patients look 10-15 years younger! When paired with a proper, disciplined skincare routine, and energy based device maintenance, your improvements will last for years to come.
