Helping you achieve the most attractive skin possible is our first goal at SpaMedica.

What is Acne and what is an effective Acne Treatment?

According to the Canadian and American Societies of Dermatology, acne concerns affect tens of millions of people annually who spend a great deal of money for over the counter acne products that have little success or efficacy. So, if you have been frustrated by stubborn acne concerns that persist despite your own best skin care efforts, and if you are wondering if you are a candidate for our SpaMedica Toronto acne treatments and programs, call or email us for a consultation. Our acne treatment consultation and evaluation process is one of the most thorough skin health exams you will ever have and our Toronto acne specialists will formulate a customized acne treatment program designed for the individual needs of your skin. We want to ensure that you have the highest probability of controlling and conquering your acne problems. We offer only the best, most advanced and successful acne treatment equipment, therapies and home skin care.

Acne arises from an inflammatory eruption around bacteria that we leave in our hair and sweat (sebaceous) glands within our skin. Traditional acne treatments use antibiotics and harsh cleansers in an attempt to control bacteria. Prolonged antibiotic use and harsh skin cleansing is not always successful at controlling acne and may negatively affect your skin, so our SpaMedica Toronto Acne Practice has brought in the best possible acne treatment equipment, procedures, home skin care and technology. We have a very high incidence of acne control; reducing active lesions by up to 80 – 90 percent.

What do SpaMedica Acne Treatments Include?

The SonoPeel microdermabrasion uses gentle ultrasound to micro-abrade the surface of your skin. By reducing the thickness of the top layer of your skin, the stratum corneum, acne prone skin can be improved by helping to reduce blackheads, white heads and sebaceous plugs, all of which contribute to acne breakouts. The SonoPeel Ultrasonic Microdermabraion, with its cavitational ultrasound, is an effective tool to melt and reduce sebaceous plugs in acne treatments. Other forms of microdermabrason such as Salicylic Acid Peel, Chemical Peel, Crystal Peel and Silk Peel Diamond Microdermabrasion, depending upon your skin type, may also be recommended by our Toronto acne physicians for the reduction of your stratum corneum. The resulting smooth stratum corneum is much more attractive, even and bright and reduces the likelihood of a sebaceous plug and hence reduces the risk of an acne breakout.

SpaMedica acne specialists will likely add Blue Light to microdermabrasion when treating your acne. Blue Light acts to stimulate special chemicals in your sebaceous glands, called protoporphyrins which attack and kill the bacteria in the sebaceous glands. Blue Light therapy is painless and is repeated 2-3 times per week in an 8 week program. Blue Light therapy is combined with microdermabrasion to attack bacteria from the “outside in” and “inside out”. An additional special chemical, called Aminoleuvlinic Acid (ALA) or leuvulan may be added to the skin to amplify the BlueLight’s ability to kill acne bacteria. ALA Leuvulan is a topical chemical painted on the skin 30 minutes before a Blue light treatment. It blocks an enzyme in the skin cells that increases dramatically the reactive protophorphryin level in the cells and hence increases the number of bacteria that can be killed. Your ALA levulin treatment may be combined with FotoFacial RF treatments.

FotoFacial RF is an intense pulsed light based on radio frequency energy, when used alone or in combination with the microdermabrasion, can greatly enhance acne treatment results. The intense pulsed light is attracted to, heats and treats red and brown discoloration in the skin, eyrthema, rosacea and broken capillaries. By heating the red discoloration, SpaMedica acne specialists are able to close the excess blood vessels, reduce red discolorations and shrink enlarged pores, which are common features of acne. The radiofrequency energy not only tightens pores of acne prone skin and shrinks enlarged pores but it also shrinks down the sebaceous glands where the acne bacteria live.

Your SpaMedica in office acne treatment program will be complimented with a recommendation for our medical grade Home Skin Care which will helps support and enhance your results.

Who is a candidate for an Acne Treatment or Acne Program?

SpaMedica acne treatment programs are indicated for individuals over 18 years old, who have active acne (those younger must be accompanied by a parent) or who want to control acne prone skin.
