What is a Lip Injection?

Lip injections are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure used to increase the volume of your lips. Fillers usually contain a hyaluronic gel and are available from various brands, including Revanesse, Restylane, Perlane, or Juvederm.

In the past, collagen was often used as a lip filler, but that practice is less common today.

Combination is The Key

SpaMedica has some of the most experienced physician and nurse injectors and the largest selection of dermal fillers in Canada. At the time of your consultation, your consult coordinator will review the best combination of lip fillers to provide the results you are looking for.

SpaMedica is Canada’s largest, oldest, and most respected private cosmetic laser center. Why are there so many dermal fillers available? The answer is simple: soft tissue filler results are often only achieved by the customized combination of two or more of the dermal fillers products that work in different yet synergistic and summative ways. The fillers you can choose from at our Toronto SpaMedica clinic include:

Revanesse

Restylane

Teosyal

Sculptra

● Bellafill (Artecoll)

Radiesse

Juvederm

Lip Injection Risks

Lip injections, like any medical procedure, carry certain risks. However, at SpaMedica, our experienced non-surgical team—comprising of dermatologists, and registered nurses, all led by Dr. Amber Chen—has been expertly administering lip filler injections for over two decades, ensuring that the likelihood of any serious complications is minimal. Typically, any side effects should subside within 48 hours. If they persist, it’s important to inform your specialist promptly. Most complications can be effectively addressed with an enzyme antidote that dissolves the lip filler, reversing the effects safely.

Side effects for non-surgical lip augmentation are similar to those associated with dermal fillers, including:

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Swelling and vascular compromise
  • Redness

How to Prepare for a Lip Injection

Refrain from utilizing blood thinners such as fish oils, Aspirin, Aleve, ibuprofen, and Advil for at least seven days before your appointment – this also pertains to alcohol. Drink plenty of water before your procedure, as it will improve your body’s ability to heal itself. If you have a history of cold sores, please notify your doctor, as injections may trigger a flare-up. Keeping the treatment area clean and well moisturized will significantly minimize your risk of infection and pain.

What to Expect After a Lip Injection

While swelling and redness may be present for the first 24- 72 hours after your injection, the swelling is normal and will subside entirely after one week. Do not massage your lips, as it risks moving the filler around. Refrain from exercise for at least 24 hours post-procedure to not increase blood flow to your face.

Lip Injection Recovery & Timeline

1 hour: Ice your lips to decrease inflammation.

24 hours: Refrain from exercising or strenuous activity.

6 days: Do not massage your lips.

1 Week: Your swelling will fully subside, and results will appear.

After 1 Week: You can begin applying makeup and regular skin care routine again.

Best Procedures Paired with Lip Injections

Botox, soft tissue dermal fillers for the cheeks, chin, and facial areas, and fractional lasers are often paired with lip injections.

Lip Injection FAQ

Can You Get Lip Fillers While Pregnant?

The use of injectables or fillers while pregnant has not been FDA-approved.

When Can I Eat or Drink After Having My Lips Filled?

You must wait until your lip filler’s numbing agent (lidocaine) has worn off before you can comfortably eat and drink following your procedure. This generally takes a few hours. In addition, avoid eating or drinking any foods or drinks that are difficult to chew in the first 24 hours following your procedure, as this may compromise your procedure’s results.

How Painful is it to Get a Lip Injection?

As most fillers are blended with lidocaine, you barely feel a thing. There is a tiny initial prick, and the lidocaine kicks in virtually instantly. At SpaMedica, we deploy laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, to ensure that all injection and laser patients are comfortable.

Will My Lips Be Swollen After the Treatment?

There may be some swelling and redness associated with dermal fillers, and it’s recommended to ice the treatment area for at least an hour following the procedure.

How Long Do Lip Injections Last?

Since the results of lip injections are never permanent, many choose to return for supplemental lip filler injections a year after treatment.

Can My Doctor Administer More Than 1 Syringe of Filler?

Most patients opt for 1-2 syringes of filler. One syringe has 1.0 cc of dermal filler, lasting anywhere between 10 to 18 months.

How Can I Prepare For Lip Injections?

Keep the treatment area clean and well moisturized, minimizing your risk of infection and pain.

Can Men Get Lip Injections?

Of course! Despite fielding hundreds of clients yearly, one Miami surgeon says he always sees the same four’ celebrity wish pics’: Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum, Harry Styles, and Henry Cavill.

Will my Lips Look Overdone?

The skill and experience of the injector, not the product injected, is the most important factor in ensuring your lips do not look “overdone.”

What Happens to the Lips As We Age?

As part of the natural aging process, the volume of your lips will reduce, leaving you with a thinner, flatter appearance. You’ll also develop fine lines and wrinkles on and around your lips, and your cupid’s bow will become less defined. Other factors such as gravity, genetics, and smoking can cause the corners of the mouth to turn down or sag, creating a worn, aged look.
