Are You a Candidate?
Good candidates are men who have excess fat on the flanks, lower abdominal, chest, or double chin who have been unable to archive the contour they desire through diet or exercise. Dr. Mulholland has 20 years of expertise in pioneering the area of energy-assisted liposuction, particularly the BodyTite, SmartLipo, and VASER Lipo.

Liposuction for Men FAQs
What is different about liposuction for men?
Liposuction for men, in the era of modern liposuction, is different in general from female liposuction body contouring cases. The reason liposuction for men are fundamentally different from female liposuction techniques is that male fat tends to be much more fibrous, with many more fibro-septal networks, vertical fibroseptae, and collagenous bands than in female fat (think of the tissue being more “gristle”-like). This makes it much more difficult to actually remove or aspirate the fat using old-fashioned, traditional tumescent liposuction techniques. Dr. Mulholland is renowned for his liposuction for men results as he has pioneered the advent and use of energy-assisted liposuction techniques such as VASER LipoTM, SmartLipoTM, and BodyTiteTM radiofrequency-assisted lipo.
These energy-assisted devices are inserted into the unwanted areas of male fat to gently and effectively coagulate and liquefy the more fibrous male fat that is difficult to remove with traditional, old-fashioned extraction techniques. VASER Lipo uses ultrasound waves to liquefy and coagulate the unwanted fat, which can then be used for transplantation. For men, that is often to the midface or undereye area.
Figure 1 A. The VASER probe gently using ultrasound energy to cavitate, liquefy, and separate the fibrous male fat for easy removal and aspiration.
SmartLipo, or laser-assisted liposuction, uses gentle laser energy to liquefy and coagulate the more gritty male fat and blood vessels. This facilitates a gentle removal and ensures a 17% overall skin contraction; minimizing any risk of loose skin.
Figure 2. The SmartLipo laser is used to soften and liquefy the hard, fibrous male fatty tissue. The liquefied fat is then easier to remove making the procedure more gentle with far less bruising, swelling and discomfort.
Finally, BodyTite is also deployed during liposuction for men. The radiofrequency electrical waves of the BodyTite device liquefy and coagulate the fat and break down the fibrous tissue for easy extraction, leading to optimal contours. The big advantage of the BodyTite during male liposuction is the softening and removal of the fibrous male fat. Additionally, BodyTite provides an overall 35% soft tissue contraction.
Figure 3. Male liposuction areas respond very well to the strong coagulative effects of radiofrequency energy. Hard, gritty male fat is softened, liquefied and then removed gently, with little trauma. The male skin envelope may then contract and shrink up to 35% after BodyTite.
Male patients who seek out lipocontouring with Dr. Mulholland get the advantage of his 20 years of expertise and his pioneering innovation in the area of energy-assisted liposuction, particularly BodyTite, SmartLipo and VASER Lipo, to get the best possible contour results available. Usually, during liposuction for men, Dr. Mulholland will deploy all three devices – VASER Lipo, SmartLipo and BodyTite – in different levels and for different reasons to achieve the best possible contours and shapes.
What are the most common anatomical areas for male liposuction?
The most common areas of liposuction for men are the love handles; also known as the “spare tire,” which is extra convex distensions of fat over the love handles and flanks, often extending round to the back and in communication with the lower abdominal “pot”. Also very common for Dr. Mulholland’s patients is male breast tissue. Male breast tissue can be either fatty or fibroglandular.
Figure 4. Common body areas where Male Liposuction is performed
With Dr. Mulholland’s energy-assisted devices male breast tissue is easily coagulated, liquefied, and extracted (whether it’s hard and glandular or soft and fat) thus sparing most gynaecomastia patients the embarrassment of breast scars around the areola and under the breast. Dr. Mulholland has pioneered and developed this scarless gynaecomastia liposuction breast reduction technique and it is an area of his expertise. The double chin is also a common area for Toronto male liposuction patients. Dr. Mulholland will use heating techniques like BodyTite, Necktite and SmartLipo to ensure the “waddle of fat” under the chin is removed and the skin is reciprocally tightened.
How is liposuction for men performed?
Energy assisted liposuction techniques are generally performed either under local anesthesia with oral sedation or local anesthesia with IV (or general) sedation. Most patients who are not prone to anxiety over the added risk of general anesthesia can have liposuction performed with modern, gentle liposuction techniques under local anesthesia and oral sedation. Local anesthesia is inserted into the area of unwanted fat. The fat then becomes totally anesthetic (numb), much like a dental procedure, and the gentle heating and extraction can be performed. Once the local anesthesia, also called tumescent anesthesia, is completed, the energy-assisted devices – VASER Lipo, Smartlipo and/or BodyTite – are deployed to liquefy, coagulate and tighten. Once this has occurred, this liquefied, coagulated fat is immediately aspirated with a gentle, small, blunt-nose tipped microcannula.
Who is a candidate for liposuction for men?
The best candidates for liposuction are those men who have unwanted depositions of fat that detract from ideal shape and contour. These men have already tried their best at diet and exercise to modify their shape and figure. Good candidates are medically well without uncontrolled illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension. Contraindications to liposuction include anyone who is unrealistic about the shape and figure they can achieve or are medically unwell or excessively overweight. Common areas are the love handles, tummy, double chin, and male breast tissue.
What kind of anesthetic is used during liposuction?
Liposuction is performed under tumescent local anesthesia. Tumescent local anesthesia is an extremely dilute local anesthetic that is then inserted gently into the fat, distending the fat and providing loss of sensation during the procedure. The tumescent anesthesia also distends and expands the fat cells, exposing them to the ultrasound energy of VASER Lipo, or the laser energy of SmartLipo and/or the electrical current of BodyTite.
Figure 5. Dilute local anesthesia is gently infiltrated into the areas to undergo male energy assisted liposuction.
Is a liposuction for men procedure painful?
Modern liposuction uses energy-assisted devices to pre-coagulate and liquefies the fat, turning it into a sort of “fat, mango milkshake.” This is very easy to aspirate and is a gentle procedure. The energy-assisted liposuction techniques have been shown in peer-reviewed medical studies to be far less painful and have far less discomfort, bruising, and swelling than old-fashioned liposuction techniques where energy is not used. This means much less pain, a mild bruising sensation, and a much quicker return to work and activities.
How long does the procedure take?
Depending on the thickness and surface areas of the localized areas of fat to be contoured, the procedure often takes approximately 45 minutes per area and multiple areas are usually performed.
How long is the recovery following liposuction for men?
Modern liposuction using energy-assisted devices such as SmartLipo, BodyTite and VASER Lipo have a very rapid recovery. It is not uncommon for individuals to undergo multiple-area liposuction on an afternoon and return to very light, sedentary work/non-work-related activities the following day. It is usually recommended, however, that you take two to three days off after your lipocontouring procedure to have time to focus on recovery. The recovery process is also characterized by the patient wearing a post-liposuction garment. In men, sometimes a small drain is used as well to help “attach” the skin to the underlying muscle.
Figure 6. A postoperative liposuction compression garment is worn to improve skin contour
A post-liposuction garment is a high-tech, Spandex or Lycra-type of Spanx® compression garment. It is used to shrinkwrap the overlying soft tissue while it heals in the ideal shape and contours. In general, these liposuction garments can be worn under any clothing and are quite comfortable. They provide very comfortable support during the healing process.
Generally, liposuction garments are worn 22 hours a day for three weeks. After three weeks, the liposuction garments are worn for support during the day and left off in the evening and overnight. Men who undergo liposuction can often return to low-impact activities such as walking, the stair climber, or elliptical within the first week or two. Return to high-impact activities such as jogging, running, aggressive weight training and activities such as hot yoga and stretching should wait till the fourth to the sixth week.
What will I look like after liposuction for men?
Immediately after the procedure, there will be some swelling, which is contained by your compression garment. Modern liposuction using energy-assisted devices does not generally result in much bruising. If possible, avoidance of aspirin three weeks prior to the procedure will minimize the risk of any bruising.
What kind of results can I expect after liposuction for men?
Modern liposuction using VASER Lipo, BodyTite and SmartLipo, all deployed during the same procedure in an expert symphonic orchestration of fat reduction, can result in very good contour enhancement results. Dr. Mulholland is well-known for his advanced male patient body sculpting on all areas of the body. Improvements in figure, shape, and contour are assured as fat is removed in the areas of contour concern. However, the focus of Dr. Mulholland’s liposuction patients should be on improvement in body, shape, and contour, not on weight. Naturally, fat is removed so there will be some weight loss but the focus is on inches and contour, not kilograms and pounds.

What are patients saying about their liposuction for men?
Dr. Mulholland has performed his energy-assisted liposuction techniques on multiple TV shows and in newspaper and magazine articles, which has helped to educate Toronto patients on what is new, effective and available. Most male liposuction patients are extremely happy with the results of their body contouring because they realize no diet or exercise can, in a localized and focal way, reduce unwanted bulges and contours such as breast tissue, love handles, and lower abdominal fat. Dr. Mulholland’s patients are particularly satisfied because of his expertise in assuring the best possible soft tissue contraction after the removal of the fat; ensuring the best possible probability of tight, soft, compact, shapely figure enhancements after liposuction.
How long will the results last after liposuction for men?
The results of your liposuction will be lifelong. The fat that is removed will not return. It is very important to have weight maintenance after liposuction and stay within five to ten pounds of your liposuction weight to ensure permanent contour and figure enhancements. Excessive weight gain will usually result in fat traveling not to the liposuction area, but to other areas where traditionally you would not have collected fat; compromising the figure, shape, and form.
Is there any maintenance required after liposuction for men?
There is no surgical liposuction maintenance required for the fat that has been removed, as it is permanently gone. However, maintenance with skin-tightening, body heating treatments, such as bulk heating radiofrequency devices like Venus Freeze, Accent, Exilis, the VASERShape, the Forma, or Thermage Body, may be deployed in your program to ensure optimal skin contraction and tightness. Once your series of post-operative treatments have been completed, Dr. Mulholland will recommend a single treatment every three months to maintain skin tautness, elasticity and contour.
How much will liposuction for men cost?
Dr. Mulholland has a range in liposuction pricing, depending on the size and amount of fat and number of areas to be removed. In general, single-zone, modern energy-assisted lipo with the three combined devices of VASER Lipo, SmartLipo and BodyTite deployed during a single treatment area will start from $3,999.00 with subsequent zone discounting for second, third and fourth zones. Generally, depending on the size of the patient and their Body Mass Index, patients can have three to four zones performed with total body contouring starting from $9,999.00.
