FUE, or follicular unit extraction, ensures genetically related hair families grow together to produce a more natural-looking hair pattern. This is achieved by harvesting follicular units or micrografts containing 1, 2, 3, or 4 hair roots—depending upon the unit structure of the given follicle. For the most effective method of harvest without leaving a linear scar, robotic FUE harvest technologies Artas and NeoGraft are deployed to extract hair from the back of the scalp.
Dr. Mulholland will request a series of “before photos” prior to your micro FUE hair transplant. Be sure to include photos from a variety of angles: from the front with your hairline exposed; left and right side profile shots; left and right side 45-degree angle shots; the crown of your head; and the back of your head.
As is strongly advised before any cosmetic surgery, it’s best to refrain from drinking alcohol for at least 3 days prior to your FUE hair transplant. Your crown may be shaven just before surgery in order to allow the newly placed grafts to grow out at the same time as your genetic hair. In the case of sessions involving 1500+ grafts, the back and sides of your scalp will be shaven as well.
Phase 1 of your FUE hair transplant entails extraction from the donor site. This process is about 4 hours long. In phase 1, our “stick-and-place” technique is deployed. A small hypodermic needle creates a slit between your recipient hair, and a graft is inserted each time the needle is removed. This is repeated until all the grafts are placed, taking 2-4.5 hours. You can expect a full 8-10 hour day when planning for your FUE hair transplant.
Immediately post-transplant, a dressing is placed over the tiny extraction holes. Regular follow-ups via FaceTime are easily scheduled for all of our out-of-town patients. Most patients return to work after 7-12 days. Important: wait 12-14 months to evaluate the final results of your FUE hair restoration!
