SpaMedica has been performing automated FUE procedures since 1997, longer than any other clinic on the continent. Dr. Mulholland, the former lead surgeon of SpaMedica, has FUE expertise is like none other. He has lectured, taught, and/or trained the majority of automated FUE physicians in North America. At SpaMedica in Toronto, we’re proud to say we’ve placed over a million FUE grafts!
For 25 years, Dr. Mulholland has been a pioneer in Cosmetic Surgery, but has retired from active Plastic Surgery Practice in May 2021. He will continue to educate and teach the science of practice management through his BoomerangFX book, webinars series, and online courses, as well as pursue his work with InMode MD electrosurgical (a company he co-founded) in the United States and abroad.
FUE, or follicular unit extraction, allows follicular units to be harvested in micrografts: that’s in singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples. This ensures genetically related hair families grow together in order to appear more natural-looking. The most effective way to undergo a FUE hair transplant without leaving a linear scar is by harvesting hair from the back of your scalp with robotic FUE harvest technologies Artas and NeoGraft–and that’s precisely what we do.
Preparing for your surgery
Your head will be shaven pre-procedure to allow the grafts and genetic hair to grow out together post-procedure. Avoid shaving or cutting your hair for at least 2 weeks before your FUE transplant, and, as with all surgeries, avoid drinking alcohol for at least 3 days before your procedure.
FUE Procedure Overview
Phase 1 of the procedure involves extraction from the back of your scalp. This takes 4 hours. Phase 2 deploys a “stick-and-place” technique in which a small hypodermic needle creates a slit between your recipient hair. As the needle is removed, the graft is placed. This takes 2-4.5 hours. In total, you should plan for an 8-10 hour day.
Aftercare & Recovery
Post hair transplant, a dressing is placed over the tiny extraction holes at the back of your scalp. Follow-ups via FaceTime can easily be scheduled throughout your recovery! Most patients are able to return to work in 7-12 days. Allow 12-14 months before judging the full results of your hair restoration!
Dr. Mulholland will ask you for “before photos,” so be sure to get shots from several key angles: the front, with your hairline visible; left and right side profile shots; left and right side 45-degree angle shots; the crown of your head; and the back of your head.
