Procedure to Treat Old Looking Breast Skin

How Does Breast Skin Change with Age

The skin on your breasts, like the skin on the rest of your body, will naturally change as you age. Because your body stops producing collagen and elastin as you age, you may notice that your breast skin becomes droopy, loose, or saggy, and may develop wrinkles over time. You may also notice stretch marks, and that your breasts begin to look elongated or flattened, and that they sit further apart. These changes can also be caused by the fact that your body stops producing reproductive hormones, such as estrogen, as you age; estrogen helps your breasts maintain their fullness and buoyancy, and a lack of estrogen can cause breasts to appear smaller, flatter, and fuller down than before.

Breast Skin Changes Causes

Many of the changes to the texture and appearance of your breasts are caused by your body’s natural aging process. As you age, your body stops producing the collagen and elastin needed by your skin to produce laxity and firmness, and since you also stop producing estrogen, your breasts may lose their fullness over time. Many women will begin to notice changes to their breasts during menopause, or after the surgical removal of their ovaries, due to the hormone changes that occur.

However, while the natural aging process is likely to cause changes, some lifestyle choices can accelerate or exacerbate these changes to your breast skin. These include the use of tanning beds or excessive sun exposure, which can damage skin and cause wrinkling, as can smoking.

Treating Old-Looking Breast Skin Changes

Non-Surgical Treatments of Old-Looking Breast Skin

For many women, changes to the appearance of their breasts and breast skin can cause self-consciousness and lowered self-esteem. There are a number of non-surgical options available, to restore fullness and a more youthful appearance to the breasts.

FotoFacial

A FotoFacial treatment can be used to address discolouration, fine lines, blemishes, spider veins and brown spots. This treatment uses radiofrequency, infrared, and intense pulsed light (IPL) energy to address these concerns. Despite its name, FotoFacial treatments can be used on a number of places, including the chest and breasts.

Fractional CO2 Laser

Fractional CO2 laser treatment uses a laser to deliver microscopic columns of energy into deep layers of the skin, which stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. This triggers the skin’s healing process, which results in smoother, tighter skin.

Surgical Treatments of Old Looking Breast Skin

If your breast skin’s change in appearance is quite severe, and if you also wish to correct the shape and fullness of your breasts, you may wish to investigate surgical options, which are more drastic and can result in more significant changes.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that fixes sagging or drooping breast tissue, removes excess skin, and restores a more youthful appearance. This procedure, which is invasive and is performed under general anesthesia, can be combined with a breast augmentation to more significantly correct changes in the shape and appearance of the breasts that may have occurred with age.

During a breast lift procedure, your surgeon will make incisions either around the areola, from the crease of the breast over the nipple, and/or horizontally along the breast crease. Your breast tissue will be reshaped during the surgery, and any excess skin will be removed. If necessary, your nipples will be repositioned, and if you have opted for breast augmentation as well, your surgeon will insert your implants. The incisions are then closed. Breast lift and breast augmentation surgeries generally take one and a half to two months to fully recover from; your surgeon will advise on how to care for your incisions after your surgery and when you can resume your regular activities, such as exercise

How Much Does It Cost to Treat Old Looking Breast Skin?

The cost of your procedure will depend on whether you choose a surgical or non-surgical solution, as well as whether you require more than one procedure or repeat visits. Non-surgical procedures generally tend to be less costly than surgical ones; however, with non-surgical options, results tend to be less drastic and repeat procedures are often required. In your consultation with SpaMedica’s surgical team, you will be advised on what type or types of procedures are ideal for correcting your specific concerns.
