5 Important Tips to Keep In Mind After Rhinoplasty

5 Important Tips to Keep In Mind After Rhinoplasty

So you finally decided to take the plunge and go for it—you got a nose job! No longer will you have to deal with the insecurities you had with your nose. You finally got it dealt with. We wish we could say recovery will be no big deal, but that’s not usually the case. Recovering after nose surgery might not be the most comfortable period in your life, but think about the end results. It’ll be worth it.

1. You Can’t Wear Glasses for 4 Weeks After Surgery

If you wear glasses or feel like slipping on some sunglasses, you won’t be able to…at least for a month after rhinoplasty. This is because the nasal bridge needs to heal properly. Light pressure can distort and indent the nasal bones. Of course, most people really need to wear glasses, to well, see.  You’ll have to get a little creative if you need to wear them. You can tape them to your forehead or add padding between the glasses and nose. After a month, your nasal bones should be strong enough for you to wear glasses normally.

2. A Low-Sodium Diet Reduces Swelling

A healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables and fiber helps the healing process. It also reduces the swelling that occurs after surgery. Maintaining a diet that’s low in sodium helps minimize fluid retention in the nasal tip. You might be instructed to follow this type of diet post-op, but it’s not a bad idea to start these healthy eating habits a few weeks before the procedure.

3. Most People Won’t Realize That You’ve Had Anything Done

Unless they see you with nasal splints and bandages, most people won’t even notice the changes in your nose after recovery period. The changes may be obvious to you, but not so much to others. After all, people are wrapped up in their own lives and insecurities. People might notice that you look a little different, but they probably won’t be able to tell what exactly the change is.

4. Your Final Results Aren’t Visible Right Away

Expecting to see the nose of your dreams right after rhinoplasty? We hate to break it to you, but that’s not the case. Swelling can take several months, a year or more to subside. Your final results won’t be immediate as the nose will continue to take its shape and form over time. That’s also why physicians tell patients that they shouldn’t think of revision rhinoplasty until at least 1 year after their first nose surgery.

5. Hot and Spicy Foods Should Be Off Limits

Most people love a hot meal and some can’t resist spicy food, but these foods have to be avoided for at least one week after surgery. These foods can potentially elevate blood pressure and cause bleeding after rhinoplasty. Eating food that can irritate the nose and stomach isn’t a wise idea as it can disrupt the healing process. It’s best to stick to a diet that consists of soft and bland food—think jell-o, pudding, mashed potatoes and soup.

These are just some tips and suggestions to keep in mind after rhinoplasty. As each person differs in how they heal and recover, the “rules” won’t apply to everyone. Your plastic surgeon will give you detailed instructions and recommendations before and after surgery.
